Sebastian Maniscalco Named JFL Stand Up Comedian of the Year, Aziz Ansari, Maria Bamford, Silicon Valley Also Honored

Sebastian Maniscalco has been a runaway comedy train, which is why this year the Just For Laughs award committee unanimously chose him as their Stand Up Comedian of the year. Also on the list to receive top awards at this years Just for Laughs Comedy Festival are Maria Bamford who is the Breakout Comedy Star of the Year, Silicon Valley creators Mike Judge and Alec Berg named Writers of the Year, and Aziz Ansari, who takes the title of Comedy Person of the Year.

Lady Dynamite is The Series Comedy Fans Have Been Waiting For

Lady Dynamite has been a long time coming and, it’s funny. Maria Bamford’s new semi-autobiographical Netflix series is well crafted, and about as fun as anything you've ever seen on television. It won't be experienced by as many people as saw Trainwreck this year, and that's a shame, because its not only fun and funny, it's also silly and poignant, and even important.

Exploring the Exquisite Work of Michelle McNamara

Patton Oswalt’s latest hour-long stand-up special, “Talking for Clapping” is astute, pointedly hilarious and as strong as you’d expect. It was released streaming to Netflix April 22nd. It has more to do with children’s birthday parties than death. Oswalt, a prolific constant within comedy, tweeted to promote the special as well as condolences for the loss of Prince. Hours later he lost his wife and the mother of their young daughter for reasons unknown. Her name was Michelle McNamara.

The Writers Guild of America 2016 writing awards were handed out over the weekend. The guild breaks up the ceremonies into two events, one on each coast. In the age of social media, the announcement of winners often gets to the left coast well before the event begins, destroying the anticipation and dulling the proverbial shine of the event. Legendary screenwriter Elaine May managed to save the day with her insight and wit, playfully mocking role of the writer in Hollywood. “Then someone told me there’s going to be a red carpet...Excuse me, no designer is going to give writers clothes!”
