Comedians Who Wanted to Rock, and Got Their Big Chance

3.  Dan Aykroyd & John Belushi (As The Blues Brothers) “Sweet Home Chicago”

For the sake of convenience I’m including Dan and John in the list as one entry, since their most popular musical endeavor was The Blues Brothers. Yeah, Jake and Elwood were characters that came about through an SNL sketch, but Aykroyd and Belushi used their talent to create not only a goddamn classic film, but also a #1 album in 1978, Briefcase Full Of Blues. I may be skating the line a little bit by including these fellas, but go fuck yourself. It’d be a different story if they were singing novelty tunes, but ask anyone who knows a thing or two about blues and they’ll tell you that there’s nothing to laugh at about the legitimacy of The Blues Brothers. I really enjoy their take on “Sweet Home Chicago”, a blues standard as old as blues itself written by and first performed in the 30’s by Robert Johnson. Belushi tragically passed away before he could really live out his full potential, and it’s depressing, too, because John had way more to give.
