Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?

This week, Colbert welcomes Wanda, Fallon recommends Rojo and Conan gives his goodbye.

It’s one of those weeks that changes everything in late night television. And that’s not a sentence that gets used a lot. Once a host finds him or herself in a chair behind a late night desk, it’s not one that they give up easily. That’s the case with Conan O’Brien.

Conan has been sitting behind a late night desk for 28 years. He was first known as a television comedy writer for “The Simpsons” and “Saturday Night Live“, but TV viewers didn’t meet him until he was announced as the unlikely pick to host “Late Night” on NBC in 1993. He quickly became the heir apparent to take Jay Leno’s chair on the Tonight Show. And Conan did that in 2009. But remember that thing we said about late night hosts not giving up their chair all that easily? Well, only 6 short months later….

Jay Leno wanted the Tonight Show back and rather than share the time slot with Jay and tarnish the legacy left behind by the iconic Johnny Carson, Conan O’Brien took his comedy skills to basic cable. The “Conan” show launched on November 8, 2010 on TBS.

Now in 2021 and after 28 years as a late night host (at one place or another), the TBS chapter in Conan O’Brien’s career is coming to an end. He won’t be gone entirely. Conan is moving to the entertainment platform HBO Max with a once-a-week show. But there will no longer be a really tall, red-headed guy touching his nipple on your TV late at night.

Before he leaves, Conan O’Brien has 4 shows left. And he’s invited 4 of his favorite guests who just happen to be 4 of the funniest guests to ever sit opposite of Conan O’Brien on the guest’s couch. Monday starts off with 3 time Emmy Award winner Bill Hader from SNL and HBO’s “Barry.” On Tuesday night, Conan welcomes Seth Rogen whose most recent project is the Hulu bio pic “Pam & Tommy” which is about the love story between Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee and actress Pamela Anderson.

On Wednesday’s show, it’s SNL legend Dana Carvey who gets to say goodbye to Conan. And finally on Thursday night, Team Coco welcomes its final guest Jack Black to give Conan a rockin’ send-off. There won’t be a lot of time for long goodbyes since Conan shortened his show to only 30 minutes, but we totally expect Jack Black to sing Conan O’Brien into late night retirement.

Any late night news will be dominated by the “Conan Finale” this week, but there are other things happening after dark. The Daily Show with Trevor Noah has two specials on Monday and Tuesday and then Trevor and the news team are off the rest of the week.

On Monday, the Comedy Central news show celebrates the life of the iconic Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg with the “Daily Show With Trevor Noah Presents Remembering RBG: A Nation Ugly Cries with Desi Lydic.” On Tuesday, CC presents the “Daily Show With Trevor Noah Presents Jordan Klepper Fingers The Pulse: Into The MAGAverse” where the ace reporter attempts to see what makes Trump supporters tick.

Tuesday, watch for Wanda Sykes when she appears on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Wanda is promoting her new streaming series, “The Upshaws.” The show is a return to the sitcom style of the 1970s and ’80s. “The Upshaws” just began streaming exclusively on Netflix last month.

Speaking ’70s and ’80s television, Wednesday, there’s 2 beloved stars appearing in late night who first arrived on our TVs over 40 years ago. Billy Crystal, who we first met on the ABC sitcom “Soap” will be a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday night. Meanwhile over at NBC, Henry Winkler who played TV’s America’s favorite biker, the Fonz on “Happy Days” will be on the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday.

Thursday night is one of those nights that a comedian will remember for the rest of their life. Thursday is the Tonight Show debut of Rojo Perez. He’s a New York based comic who was part of the HBO comedy special “Entre Nos: Spot On” in 2019 and Rojo’s been playing major clubs all over the country until of course, the pandemic. Rojo couldn’t pick a better television venue as comedy starts to make a comeback in America. Watch for Rojo Perez making his Tonight Show debut on Thursday at 11:30pm et.

Finally this weekend, Saturday Night Live is well into its summer of reruns and this coming Saturday, SNL is replaying one of the more anticipated episodes from this past season that caused some controversy. Inventor and entrepreneur Elon Musk will be hosting an SNL repeat with musical guest Miley Cyrus. Since it’s a rerun, there’s no need for a spoiler alert. There was nothing to worry about. The cast did not stage a walk-out and nothing scandalous happened.

So forget the drama people, and enjoy the comedy.
