Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?

This week, James Corden has A-List reruns, Jimmy Kimmel has guest host repeats, and Stephen Colbert fills his replays with Emmy clout.

Welcome back to another week of late night reruns. With the Olympics pre-empting both Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show and Seth Meyers’ Late Night, the other network hosts have decided to shutter for the week as well. But let’s hear it for these hosts for packing so much comedy fire-power into their repeats this week.

James Corden gets kudos, that’s if “kudos” are still a thing, for the repeats he’s airing this week. On Monday, Corden has a Late Late Show rerun with special guest Tiffany Haddish. On Tuesday night, the Late Late Show is re-airing an episode featuring the new Queen of Daytime Mean (even though she never wanted that title) Ellen DeGeneres. Then on Wednesday’s Late Late Show, James Corden has a repeat featuring a comedic actor who’s put together a very impression résumé with roles in “Fleabag“, “Stranger Things” and “American Dad!“, Brett Gelman.

Jimmy Kimmel is continuing his summer hiatus all through this week. So even though, Jimmy Kimmel is in repeats this week, it will be Jimmy Kimmel Live reruns featuring guest hosts. Filling in for Jimmy in his reruns this week, are Anthony Anderson on Monday, Tuesday and Friday, the great Wanda Sykes on Wednesday and that leaves Thursday for guest host Nick Kroll* who will have Seth Rogen as a guest on his JKL repeat.

* Nick Kroll is going to make rerun history this week. Not only will he be a guest host on Thursday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live replay, but he’ll be the guest on the JKL rerun airing Wednesday with special guest host Wanda Sykes. Leave it to Jimmy Kimmel to make reruns complicated.

Stephen Colbert will be airing Late Show repeats all this week and the shows he’s selected to re-air all have Emmy Award tie-ins. On Monday, Colbert’s replay features Jason Sudeikis who is nominated for a Prime Time Emmy Award this year for his Apple TV+ series “Ted Lasso.” Jason is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and he also has two nominations for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series at this year’s ceremony. Not bad for a show’s rookie season.

On Tuesday, Stephen Colbert is re-airing a Late Show episode with Randall Otis as his guest. Randall was nominated at last year’s Emmy Awards ceremony for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series for the Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Also, let’s congratulate Randall Otis for being named one of the Just For Laughs Festival’s 2021 New Faces of Comedy!

Wednesday’s Late Show rerun includes Hannah Einbinder who has been nominated for her first Prime Time Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. The series she was nominated for is “Hacks” co-starring Jean Smart on HBO Max. Finally on Thursday, Stephen Colbert’s repeat guest will be 6 time Emmy nominee Mindy Kaling.

With all this talk about the late night shows airing reruns all this week, it seems weird to talk about a new, live show on the late night schedule on Friday night. But we get a brand new, fresh episode of Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday at 10pm et on HBO. The show may be new, but Bill is feeling old.

Last week, Bill made the shocking announcement that he needed to wear glasses to do the show from now on. Tune in Friday night to see what astonishing revelation Bill will make this week on Real Time. Maybe he needs a hearing aid or Botox or we could find out that he’s now using one of those walk-in tubs. If Bill hadn’t mentioned his glasses, we’d probably have never noticed them.

Congratulations to Bill Maher, for making the biggest deal about wearing glasses on television since Jan Brady.
