Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: July 31, 2021

Saturday Night Live has tonight off while SNL is pre-empted for continuing coverage of the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan!

People have gotten used to Saturday Night Live‘s long summer hiatuses filled with SNL reruns, but now we’ve run into that quadrennial phenomenon where SNL bows out while NBC airs events and other footage from the Summer Olympics. This pre-emption should have happened last summer when it actually was the year 2020, but with the world shutting down for Covid, the summer games were pushed back a year.

Tonight, instead of watching SNL‘s Kate, Aidy and Beck, anyone tuning into NBC during Saturday Night Live‘s regularly scheduled time slot, will find swimming, track and beach volleyball in their place. Before we talk about which events will be taking SNL‘s TV time tonight on NBC, we can peek in on Studio 8-H and see what’s going on in the world of Saturday Night Live.

While all the senior SNL cast members (the ones who have done 7 seasons or more) have stayed mum on if they’re returning to the Emmy Award winning comedy variety series, they haven’t completely avoided the headlines.

Going into this weekend, Saturday Night Live co-head writer and Weekend Update anchorman Michael Che found himself in the news and not for the best reasons. Michael Che was under fire on social media for posts on his Instagram stories where Che allegedly began targeting World Champion gymnast Simone Biles with his comedy. The Olympic gold medalist had been in the headlines herself for pulling out of the 2020 summer games for mental health reasons.

Che was accused of posting this statement on his Instagram stories, “Man, I wanna make fun of Simone Biles.” The post went on to include Che saying, “I got like 3 mins of Simone Biles jokes in my head. Im going to the cellar tonight to say them into a microphone. As the dorky kids say I’m choosing violence.” You can read more about the Che / Biles incident at NYPost.com.

After that Che’s Instagram stories got even uglier with Che supposedly reposting responses to his comments including an old joke about former USA gymnastics doctor and current convicted sex offender Larry Nassar who had sexually abused Simone Biles and dozens of other female gymnasts. There was even an Olympic gymnastics score ranking attached to the responses Che had on his IG stories.

The twist in this story happened when Michael Che claimed that his Instagram account was hacked and that it wasn’t him that posted all the incendiary material on his account about Simone Biles. His account was wiped cleaned. Che wrote, “Mannnnn, i got hacked today. Can’t believe they got me.” Che added, “Yall know i only do jokes about whites and cops. S’all good now i changed my password and everything..”

Michael Che has always been unapologetic about his social media posts in the past. But in the current cancel culture, it’s hard to believe that Che himself would have posted these things. Or would he!? Hmm. The “I got hacked” story worked so well in the past for people like Anthony Weiner and Joy Reid. So, why wouldn’t Che try it? Or would he!? Hmm.

Cast member Pete Davidson also hasn’t said whether he would be returning for his 8th season of Saturday Night Live in the fall. However, Pete and his love life are still a hot topic in the gossip pages and now there’s one tabloid claiming that Pete’s feelings for his latest love interest may keep him from coming back to the show. OK Magazine is reporting that Pete Davidson may be leaving SNL to move to England to be closer to his new flame, Phoebe Dynevor, the British star of Netflix’s steamy period soap opera, “Bridgerton.”

According to their “source”, “Pete’s been nesting with Phoebe across the pond, and the relationship is getting serious.” The tabloid’s gossip source added that Pete, “has never met a girl quite like Phoebe before. His past doesn’t faze her, this relationship really could go all the way!” We’ll all know for sure by late September. Hopefully.

That’s all the news on the SNL cast as they continue their summer vacation. As for the Olympic coverage taking SNL‘s place tonight, it will begin in prime time on NBC and then continue after your late local news.

The events you can watch tonight instead of Saturday Night Live includes continued coverage of the women’s beach volleyball tournament. Other women’s events covered tonight will include track and field competitions with the prestigious women’s 100 meter race.

Swimming events will be on tap for tonight’s coverage including the men’s and women’s 50 meters freestyle. You can also catch the BMX freestyle finals. It’s the first time that BMX has been part of the summer Olympics. With coverage of the finals tonight, we can all see the very first gold medals ever awarded in that event. History is being made people!

Tonight, Saturday Night Live will be pre-empted for coverage of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games from Tokyo, Japan airing on the networks of NBC.

SNL is scheduled to return with summer rerun episodes on Saturday, August 14th. The repeat Saturday Night Live airing on August, 14th will be an encore presentation hosted by Adele with musical guest H.E.R.
