Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: July 10, 2021

It’s a repeat, it’s a rerun, it’s Regina King hosting tonight’s Saturday Night Live replay!
As we wait for SNL‘s 47th new season to begin this fall, we get to keep ourselves entertained with reruns from Saturday Night Live‘s 46th season. There’s not much to report about the new season at the moment. NBC hasn’t announced who’s staying and who’s going from the cast, nor have we heard which new, young comedy voices have been added to the SNL writers’ room.
The only news we’ve heard from SNL this week is that one of the Weekend Update anchors got Black Widow from “The Avengers” pregnant. And in other non-comedy SNL news, according to Page Six, cast member Pete Davidson went public with his latest gal pal, Phoebe Dynevor, from the Netflix steamy, period drama “Bridgerton.” The two started seeing each other not long after Phoebe’s “Bridgerton” co-star, Regé-Jean Page, hosted Saturday Night Live this past season. Pete never has to look too far to find love.
So with all these romantic happenings at SNL, the network has chosen the perfect rerun from last season to air tonight. It was last season’s Valentine’s Day episode of Saturday Night Live which originally aired on Saturday, February 13, 2021. It’s hosted by Academy Award winner Regina King who was promoting her film directorial debut “One Night in Miami” which earned 3 Oscar nominations and a Golden Globe nomination for Regina for directing.
This show took place about a month after Donald Trump left the White House. And even though, Trump wasn’t around, Saturday Night Live still couldn’t help lampooning Conservatives and Republicans. The SNL – Cold Open on tonight’s repeat begins with a parody of the Fox News program “Tucker Carlson Tonight” with cast member Alex Moffat playing the ever-confused looking Tucker.
It takes place right after Trump’s second impeachment acquittal with cast members Mikey Day and Pete Davidson as 45’s legal team and cast members Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant as Senators Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz respectively. The cold opener isn’t real big on laughs, so if you’re late turning on tonight’s rerun, you’re not missing much.
Regina King confesses in her SNL monologue that she’s suffering from some nerves. She explains some of the advice she got from EP Lorne Michaels which may have been advice; it just wasn’t good advice. Fortunately, the Grand Poobah of the SNL cast, Kenan Thompson arrives to act as hype-man and help guide Regina King through her first SNL monologue.
The best sketch of the night is one that was inspired by the news headlines of the day. After a year of bad news regarding the pandemic along with the U.S. Capitol being attacked in the name of a sociopath, you couldn’t blame the country for being mesmerized by a Louisiana woman who used Gorilla Glue in her hair after she ran out of hairspray. You might even say the nation was glued to this story. You might, but you shouldn’t.
On this evening’s Saturday Night Live replay, the sketch of the night is the one aptly named “Gorilla Glue.” It’s a parody spot featuring host Regina King and Kenan Thompson as husband and wife legal team, Latrice and Denzel Commode who run a law firm now taking cases for people who improperly used Gorilla Glue. Between Denzel and Latrice’s hair which is now “a hard candy shell” and testimonials from cast members Ego Nwodim, Chris Redd, Cecily Strong and Punkie Johnson, this parody ad sketch is worth a second watch tonight.
A sketch that comes in neck and neck with “Gorilla Glue” for sketch of the night is the one called “Birthday Gifts.” Cast member Aidy Bryant plays the guest of honor at a birthday party where all the gifts are those tiny, wooden signs with so-called “clever” sayings which only middle-aged white suburban moms named “Karen” would find funny. The little wooden signs get more and more cruel as the party goes on. Huh? Maybe those signs are funny after all.
The rest of the night on this evening’s Saturday Night Live rerun, you’ll see host Regina King as the contestant in a dating show sketch where she’s looking for the corny, awkward white guy of her cringy dreams. She also plays “Fliona!”, the very demanding “Queen of Disco” in a sketch from 1978, Chicago. And later in the show, Regina also stars in a sketch about an experimental feminist theater ensemble that puts on a show for high school students that will have them very confused about their elbows.
We get two SNL Shorts on tonight’s Saturday Night Live replay. The first is a parody spot inspired by the Peloton exercise bike. It’s called the “Pelo-Taunt” and it uses cruel negative reinforcement to motivate its riders. The other SNL Short tonight is “The Negotiator.” Regina King plays a police negotiator who finds herself having to talk a gunman down, but unfortunately, she got into those gummies marked “evidence.”
The lead story on Weekend Update is Donald Trump beating the rap on his second impeachment charges despite video evidence of him instigating the attack on the Capitol Building back on January 6th. Anchorman Michael Che puts it best tonight when he says, “here’s a little Black history lesson for you. Just because there’s video evidence, doesn’t mean you’re going to get a conviction.”
Other stories that Michael Che and Colin Jost cover with comedy tonight include Ted Cruz’s haircut, the Pope giving women historical promotions, a Marine base missing explosives, country star Morgan Wallen seeing his sales jump after he’s caught using the n-word, Popeye’s new fish sandwich, “The Mandalorian” actor controversy, a 117 year old nun surviving Covid, Larry Flynt passing away, “Aunt Jemima” changing its name, and McDonald’s bringing back its orange drink.
Kate McKinnon visits Jost & Che at the Weekend Update desk as Q’Anon member Stephanie Green. Her character is on the witchy side and is way too curious when she asks about a secret cabal eating children. Featured player Lauren Holt arrives at the desk as relationship expert Mackenzie Taylor-Joy who loves Valentine’s Day until she starts reading the texts from her boyfriend. Finally, cast member Beck Bennett is on Weekend Update tonight as Drunk Tom Brady who’s still celebrating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers winning Super Bowl LV.
Speaking of cast member Beck Bennett, you can see him just below doing the promos for this repeat episode of Saturday Night Live with host Regina King and musical guest Nathaniel Rateliff. The three of them discuss the positives of being in New York in cold February. Next, is romance stirring between Beck and Regina!? We’ll find out as soon as Beck gets off the phone with his wife.
Oscar winner Regina King hosts an encore presentation of Saturday Night Live tonight with musical guest, CMT Award winner Nathaniel Rateliff. This evening’s SNL repeat begins at 11:30pm et on NBC.
