The Smothers

“Mom always liked you best”. That was the signature catchphrase that helped defined Tommy and Dick, the Smothers Brothers. However, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the 1960s was about more than just their comedic sibling rivalry. Their show was a proponent for the counterculture of the time and attacked the mainstream media through humor on a regular basis. Both musicians themselves, Tommy and Dick Smothers showcased acts that might not have found a place on network television, including The Doors, Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary. Another one of the Smothers Brothers talents was the ability to spot talent. Their cast of young writers and performers on their show was amazing with names like Steve Martin, Don Novello, Rob Reiner, Pat Paulsen and Bob Einstein. After several fights with CBS and network executives over content, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was pulled from the air in 1969.
