Netflix Won’t Let Adam Sandler Die in Peace

OPINION: Netflix Won’t Let Adam Sandler Die in Peace
As we all know, Netflix has taken to snatching up anything comedy related in recent years. They’re dropping Oprah-levels of cash to secure the talents of folks like Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, Jim Norton, Chris Rock and a host of others comedians. What some may not know, however, is that this trend started with Adam Sandler. Back in 2014, Netflix signed Sandler to an exclusive four-film contract, under which Sandler is expected to produce four original films for the service. If this went down in the year 2000, then it would have been a brilliant move. It didn’t though, and it wasn’t, at least not for fans of comedy.
While some of Sandler’s films, like Big Daddy, Happy Gilmore and The Waterboy have all earned their respective places in the pantheon of Hollywood history, his more recent projects haven’t done much but cement the idea in many fans’ heads that Sandler is phoning it in harder than anyone has ever phoned it in, ever. While Netflix doesn’t release overall viewership numbers for specific titles, they insist that Sandler’s first two Netflix originals, The Ridiculous 6 and The Do-Over, are the most watched original films on the service. A lot of people watched them, yes, and a lot of those people apparently hated them. The Ridiculous 6, the first of the originals which was plagued by accusations of racial insensitivity during production, has over 2,000 reviews on Netflix, all of which total out to a one-star rating. The Do-Over didn’t fair much better, receiving over 900 reviews that leave the film at a measly one-and-a-half stars. The upcoming third film, Sandy Wexler, looks to be more of the same.
Apparently, whether viewers actually enjoyed the viewing experience matters not to Netflix, because they have just announced that they have signed Sandler on to shoot four more original films for the service in the coming years. Somewhere in a beautiful home in California, Adam Sandler is silently weeping and praying for the sweet release of death’s embrace.
