2022 Comedy Awards! Here Are Your Winners (As Voted For By You!) For the NINTH Annual Comedy Awards

Best of Everything in Comedy 2022 as Chosen by You

It’s time to close out this year’s two week long Best of Everything in Comedy Awards by announcing your choices for the winners of the best comedy of 2022. Our top ten lists were full of killer comedy and we’re so proud of all the amazing creators who made our lists.  We chose all our favorite comedy things and you voted for the winners of the 2022 Readers Poll, the only place on the internet or IRL where you get to decide who is the best of the best: The Best of Everything in Comedy 2022.

Thousands of voters representing 37 different countries voted in six comedy categories including Stand Up Comedian of the Year, Best Comedy Album, Best Hour Stand Up Special, Best Book Written by a Comedian, Best Comedy Movie, Best Comedy TV Show or Series. You also voted on Best Viral Video, Biggest Comedy Generating News Story, and Biggest Comedy Scandal in 2021.

We’re also so impressed by the 10 Innovators Who Changed Comedy in 2022  and our  Award for Remarkable Achievement of Exceptional Noteworthiness in Unrelated Categories that included our first ever SARA DAHMS Award for Outstanding Support of Live Comedy. And of course, Marty Younge’s 10 Comedians Who Crushed it in Canada in 2022.   You can see all our year-end lists– all 14 of them- right here.   Now onto the winners!

First the videos. Your pick for the BEST VIRAL VIDEO of 2022 is a THREE WAY TIE for “It’s Corn”, “Taste the Biscuit” and “The Slap”.  The Slap pretty much swept all our non comedian categories as the most influential event of 2022 by far.  You chose Chris Rock getting Slapped at the Oscars as as the #1 Scandal of the year beating out our personal favorite of Rich Vos making international waves by being banned from a Winnipeg comedy club. And you picked the The Slap as the news story that generated the most jokes, the most memes, the most viral videos and the most monologue references this year, just barely beating out the Johnny Depp Amber Heard Trial.

And now on to the big awards!

In the category of BEST COMEDY TELEVISION SERIES, this year’s most voted show was FLATBUSH MISDEMEANORS season two, which aired on Showtime.  It was a tough fight, Nathan Fielder’s HBO series The Rehearsal and Apple TV’s Severance put up a strong fight, but ultimate, Dan Perlman and Kevin Iso’s Flatbush Misdemeanors took home the gold. In season two, Dan and Kevin kept this party going AND upped their game. With thoroughly defined their characters they had the freedom to take big swings in the second season and nailed it. The story arcs all had their own absurdities that bring huge laughs, but remained grounded in authenticity. The series was both relatable while showing us a glimpse of life inside a unique neighborhood. Killer guest performers from the NYC comedy scene undoubtably launched some new careers. This show will be missed but we know its creators have much more ahead of them.    See all the nominees here.

BEST COMEDY MOVIE went to Louis CK’s independent film, FOURTH OF JULY!  Written by Joe List and Louis CK. This one was a blow out.  This movie was the hidden gem of 2022, with a phenomenal cast, giant laughs, and ton of heart. The exceptional performances from comedians and veteran actors, universal themes and terrific writing all position Fourth of July as one of the best movies of the summer and our favorite comedy movie in years. Louis’ direction is creative and seductive, making you feel like you are in the room for some first class cringe family scenes full of laughs and real life horror. Above all, it’s the funniest movie of the year by far and a perfect pick for this year’s best comedy movie.  This vote was a blow out. Only Nic Cage’s weirdly comedic thriller The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent even came close. See all the nominees here.

The BEST COMEDY BOOK category was a win for TOM SEGURA and I’D LIKE TO PLAY ALONE PLEASE . This is Segura’s first book and first win, and it’s well deserved. Segura has gone so quickly from being that underrated comedian you were proud to discover on your own, to a genuine star selling out huge theaters, and practically running the podcast world. His bestselling book delivers real-life stories of parenting, celebrity encounters, mistakes, and so much more.  Tom had strong competition from Gabe Henry’s “Eating Salad Drunk Haikus For the Burnout Age From Comedy Greats” but ultimately pulled out the win. In the stand-up categories, BEST COMEDY ALBUM had so many great albums this year and the voting was fierce. Rich Vos, a multi year winner, came incredibly close to taking the prize with his seventh album, VII, and for the first time ever, a write in candidate– Chrissy Mayr– got enough votes that we had to carefully count the write ins. for her album Live From January 6th. But ultimately, the big prize went to JEN KIRKMAN for her scalding and hilarious album, OKAY, GEN-X. Okay Gen-X is a love letter to the forgotten generation and Kirkman is a powerhouse. With her look at how fucked up the world used to be and the ways that our culture continues to be pretty shitty now, Jen she calls it like she sees it, fears no repercussions, and gets huge laughs doing it . Recorded at the hallowed Union Hall in Brooklyn, OK Gen-X is hardcore hilarious.    Read all the nominees here.

This year we loved so many comedy specials. Our list of honorable mentions was longer than the top ten list. So all ten of our specials were truly special.  But one hour jumped ahead of the pack and never lost its lead.  The BEST COMEDY SPECIAL  award goes to CHRIS DISTEFANO  for his killer hour, which he self produced and sold to Netflix, SPESHY WESHY. Distefano has a dedicated fanbase hungry for more and this is just the beginning for Chris. It’s his first time with a nomination, and he scores the win, easily.  Read all the nominees here.

Finally, the coveted STAND UP COMEDIAN OF THE YEAR goes to CHRIS DISTEFANO, scoring the rare double win, for both Special of the Year and Comedian of the Year, which is perfect. Chris Distefano is climbing the comedy ranks, and fast. He self produced his new special, Speshy Weshy, intending it to be released on YouTube, but Netflix saw it, wanted it, bought it and released it, kicking off a killer year for Chris. His “Right Intention, Wrong Move” tour has been explosive. Chris’ podcast empire keeps growing with “Chrissy Chaos” and “Hey Babe! With Sal Vulcano” are huge. He was featured on the Pat McAfee podcast, he got to set off the Vegas Gold Knights siren this year, and he was signed for a series of Volkswagen spots. And through it all, Chris can say he did it his way. A giant year that is just a stop on the way to an even bigger one.
