An engaging film, that can be enjoyed as a light summer movie with some real heart and big laughs, or as something deeper with a message. The exceptional performances from comedians, and veteran actors, universal themes and terrific writing all position Fourth of July as one of the best movies of the summer and definitely worth renting.

Director: Tom Gormican.
Written by: Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten
Cast:  Nic Cage, Pedro Pascal, Lily Mo Sheen, Sharon Horgan, Alessandra Mastronardi, Tiffany Haddish, Ike Barinholtz.

THE UNBEARABLE WEIGHT OF MASSIVE TALENT.   We heard about this film for months before it was available to watch, all raves, and it was worth the wait. It’s a comedy, action, thriller farce, with elements of parody, and weird twists all over the place.  Thoroughly original while paying homage to existing genres, Unbearable Weight is fun, smart, and thoroughly entertaining. Cage plays Nic Cage, an actor going through a career and personal rough spot in life when he decides to retire and accept a million bucks to go to a millionaire’s birthday party. The two hit it off until a CIA agent recruits him to gather intel on the millionaire. It all goes sideways from there.

Director: Jay Chandrasekhar
Written By: Ken Cheng and Kate Angelo
Cast: Jo Koy, Eugene Cordero, Tia Carrere, Jimmy O Yang, Lou Diamond Phillips

EASTER SUNDAY.  Jo Koy makes his feature film debut in this fun,  traditional comedy about family. Joe (played by Jo) is a comedian and struggling actor known for a beer commercial catch phrase, as well as a divorced single father. He’s up for a major sitcom and struggles with the networks vision for his character. He also has trouble balancing work and home life. With this backdrop he takes his son to his family Easter Sunday, where Filipino tropes run strong and everything we already love about Jo’s stand up translates perfectly to the big screen.  Koy is a natural, and the movie is fast moving and packed with laughs.

Director: Jordan Peele
Written By: Jordan Peele
Cast: Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Michael Wincott, Brandon Perea, and Keith David

NOPE.  Perfectly encapsulating the genre bending aesthetic, Nope is an American neo-Western science fiction horror comedy film. Peele’s third feature film proves he is a true original filmmaker. The film is gorgeous, it’s creepy, and it’s got a strong comedy streak running throughout.  Bonus, it has something to say and enough substance for critics to be able to argue about what that is.  Set out on a horse ranch in Cali, a man and his sister discover something dangerous in the skies.  The rest of movie focuses on various character’s reactions and interactions with the entity, and the consequences of their choices.  The cast is tremendous with great performances particularly by Kaluuya and Palmer. If horror isn’t your thing, watch it anyway. Peele has done it again.

Director: Dean Fleischer Camp

Cast: Jenny Slate, Isabella Rossellini, Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann, Lesley Stahl

MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON.  What began as a series of stop animation shorts with a cult following in 2010 hit the big screen this year and rabid fans embraced the feature film version wholeheartedly.  Marcel the Shell had a simple life with his grandmother and their pet lint in a lovely community of others like themselves. They now live alone as the sole survivors of a mysterious tragedy until a documentary filmmaker discovers them amongst the clutter of his Airbnb. This becomes world changing for Marcel and his little family. This is a comedy film that’s all heart. Beautiful, profound, and of course, funny. Jenny Slate is at her best here.

BROS.  It’s the year of the Big Gay Comedy! And first on our list, comes Bros, the first gay comedy from a major studio.  Bros follows two gay men in NYC who avoid commitment but are drawn to each other. Bobby is a podcast host who is content with casual dating, and Aaron is a lawyer who also is happy to play the field.  Bros is funny and light- a broad rom com where the rom is between two men- a take on the rom com that’s long overdue from the Hollywood studio system. Sweet, dirty, and best of all, funny, Bros should be on everyone’s list.

Director: Alex Lehmann
Written by: Robbie Fox, Chris Bremner, Jason Blumenthal
Cast: Kelly Cuoco, Pete Davidson, Deborah S. Craig

MEET CUTE  Pete Davidson is clearly the draw for this Peacock Original comedy movie, but it’s actually his female co-stars who breathe all the life into this sweet fun twist on the Groundhog’s Day genre.  Pete is great, but Kelly Cuoco is the heart of this charming romantic comedy slash science fiction time travel flick, playing Sheila. When the movie opens, it’s just a girl meeting a boy, and asking him out for a fun filled perfect first date.  Of course nothing could be farther from the truth. Deborah S. Craig is funny and fab as June, the proprietor of a nail salon that has a time traveling tanning bed in the back. There’s nothing ground rattling about Meet Cute- and at times it doesn’t even make sense- but it’s fun, and if you have Peacock, well worth the 90.

Director: Sean Anders
Written by: Sean Anders, John Morris
Cast: Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, Octavia Spencer, Sunita Mani, Patrick Page, Tracy Morgan, Loren Woods, Rose Byrne, Judi Dench, Jimmy Fallon

SPIRITED.   Spirited takes the Charles Dickens Classic, A Christmas Carol, and the Bill Murray adaptation Scrooged and flips them inside out and backwards. Starring Will Ferrell as The Ghost of Christmas Present, we go behind the scenes at Spirit Central, a non-corporeal corporate environment where the staff is in the business of helping to redeem one modern day scrooge every year. They may have met their match when they select an unredeemable man to try to turn around, played perfectly by Ryan Reynolds.  Tracy Morgan steals the movie in a small role as the Ghost of Christmas Future.

Director: Eric Appel
Written by: Al Yankovic, Eric Appel
Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Evan Rachel Wood, Rainn Wilson, Thomas Lennon, Quinta Brunson, Will Forte, Jack Black, Scott Aukerman.

WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY.  Our only biopic on our list this year, or maybe any year, is loosely based on the life of comedian and musician, Weird Al Yankovic. That would be enough to earn the movie a spot on our top ten. It’s genesis was a fake trailer made for a fake biopic that was posted on Funny or Die, which Al loved, and his fans loved so much, that the movie was ultimately made.  And THAT would be enough to earn the movie a spot on this top ten.  But its also a funny film with a great performance by the movie’s star, Daniel Radcliffe, amazing walk on roles.  It’s a meta movie, from a meta trailer, based on the career of a comedian whose  work is itself a parody and a reflection of pop culture.  True to its name, everything about this movie is Weird.

Cast: Joel Kim Booster, Margaret Cho, Bowen Yang, Conrad Ricamora, James Scully

FIRE ISLAND.  Our second gay comedy on our list this year, Fire Island, is more indie in style, budget and origin and it’s equally funny and fabulous.  We already knew Joel Kim Booster was a stand up star in the making, and now we can add acting and screenwriting to his list of tremendous talents. This modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice told through a group of gay men who vacation on Fire Island is fiercely funny, and the characters are irresistible.
Fire Island is streaming now on Hulu.
