Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?

Before we get to this week in late night comedy, we need to talk about a late night milestone from last week. The late night talk shows are taking steps towards getting back to doing things the way they did them before the pandemic. Last Friday, Real Time with Bill Maher took a major leap.

The HBO political comedy talk show hosted by Bill Maher, became the first talk show to welcome back a studio audience. Granted, as far as studio audiences go, it was sparse. The people that were in the Real Time studio were literally few and far between with plenty of social distance between them to try to stay Covid safe.

Real Time with Bill Maher had obviously coached the few people allowed in the audience for the live talk show to be as loud and laugh as hard as possible to make up for the people who were missing and would normally be in the seats besides them. Maher referenced being able to hear live people react and laugh out loud again several times during Friday’s edition of Real Time. If Maher’s audience stays safe through their protocols, it shouldn’t be too long before other late night shows start bringing live audiences back. SNL may be next. Studio 8-H’s current seating is set up perfectly for social distancing and might be ready for Saturday Night Live‘s season premiere on October 3rd.

Speaking of political comedy, this week in late night starts off with a non-comedy highlight. Author and journalist Bob Woodward will be doing his first late night interview on Monday when he sits down for a long conversation with Stephen Colbert on the Late Show.

Unless you’ve been in a cave, you know Bob Woodward of Watergate fame, who has now released audio tapes of Donald Trump admitting to lying to the American public about the Covid crisis. Woodward’s latest book on Trump called “Rage” is everywhere this Tuesday, September 15th.

Saturday Night Live fans will want to tune in to Conan on Tuesday night. SNL‘s Melissa Villaseñor will be Conan O’Brien’s guest to promote the brand new season of Saturday Night Live. Hopefully, we’ll get some more insight about the upcoming SNL – Season 46.

So far all we know about Saturday Night Live‘s new season is that it will kick off about a week later than usual this fall. The premiere of SNL‘s 46th season will be on Saturday, October 3rd. And the cast and crew will be back in Studio 8-H in NBC’s New York broadcast center at 30 Rock. However, SNL has yet to announce how much if any of an audience the live shows will allow and who will get the honor of hosting the SNL season premiere.

We’re excited for late night on Wednesday here at the IBang. It’s a chance for American fans to get to know one of Britain’s comedy exports a little better or meet him for the first time. Michael McIntyre will be appearing remotely on the Late Late Show with James Corden on Wednesday night. It’s the day after his brand new comedy special, “Michael McIntyre: Showman” debuts on Netflix.

One of England’s most popular comics, Michael McIntyre filmed his “Showman” special at the London Palladium in front of a capacity crowd before the pandemic shutdown occurred. This was following his “Michael McIntyre’s Big World Tour” which had dates all over the world and where McIntyre played in front of 800,000 of his fans.

In his new Netflix special, Michael McIntyre talks about different accents around the globe, shark attacks, American audiences versus British audiences and his well-known stories about family life. “Michael McIntyre: Showman” premieres on Tuesday, September 15th on Netflix.

On Thursday, magic legends Penn & Teller will remotely return to the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. The 7th season of “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” just wrapped this summer on the CW. The world’s most famous magic duo also found a way to make the pandemic shutdown work for them. They turned the lockdown into magic with a CW TV special which aired earlier this month called “Penn & Teller: Try This At Home.” In the special, Penn & Teller along with their magician friends, developed magic tricks at-home in quarantine and taught the audience how they too, can perform these tricks in their living rooms.

The Tonight Show isn’t known for its hard-hitting interviews, but hopefully, Penn & Teller will address how devastated the city of Las Vegas has been since the Coronavirus started shutting down shows, hotels and restaurants back in March. The state of Nevada has some of the highest rates of unemployment in the country and Penn & Teller have always championed their home base of Sin City.

Also on Thursday night, so far Conan O’Brien is keeping his Thursday night guest a secret. That means either Team Coco has a big surprise for everyone on Thursday or that the Conan bookers are waiting till the last minute to line up a Facetime guest. It will be interesting either way. Conan’s Thursday guest could now be anyone from Donald Trump to a last minute Rob Schneider grab.

Then on Saturday, SNL is replaying one of its higher rated episodes from last season. Saturday Night Live will be a repeat this week hosted by former cast member Will Ferrell with musical guest, King Princess. This episode of SNL was last season’s Thanksgiving show which originally aired on November 23, 2019.

Just a reminder. Week one of the NFL is just about over. 50% of the teams lost which means about half of you were probably disappointed. So remember, if you’re sad on Sunday, a new week of late night comedy starts on Monday!
