Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?
This week, Chris Gethard defends New Jersey, Eddie Murphy puts his cast to work plugging, and congrats to Pete Lee for achieving a comedy milestone.
Welcome to another week of staying up late and laughing hard. As the month of March arrives, here’s the listings for all the very funny guests booked on the late night talk shows this week. Monday night gives us a strong start to the week. Get ready to laugh.
Monday night, the late night comedy kicks off with Conan on TBS. Mr. Conan O’Brien’s guest will be one of the most original voices in comedy, Chris Gethard. The New Jersey born and raised comedian will be talking to Conan about hosting a new podcast which just premiered. Chris already hosts one of the most popular podcasts in the podcasting game, “Beautiful Anonymous“, but now he’s hosting a monthly podcast that pays loving tribute to his home state.
Chris Gethard’s latest podcast offering is called “New Jersey is the World.” It’s covers every aspect of the state Chris Gethard calls home. He described the new podcast in a tweet, saying it’s “a MASSIVE celebration of the Garden State.” Chris is teaming with Patreon (so it costs money) for this venture which claims “If you love the Sopranos, Springsteen, Jersey Shore, Action Park – and so many more cultural landmarks – you share the fascination” with Chris Gethard and “New Jersey is the World.”
Also, this is the week when Eddie Murphy’s long-awaited sequel to his 1988 comedy “Coming to America” premieres. In order to promote the March 5th premiere of “Coming 2 America” on Amazon Prime, Eddie Murphy has his cast making the rounds in late night television this week. On Monday evening, Eddie Murphy along with his “Coming 2 America” co-star Arsenio Hall, who was also in the original, will be virtually sitting down with Jimmy Kimmel to talk about the new comedy movie on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
Murph is getting the word out during the rest of this week as well. Most of the original “Coming to America” cast is back for the sequel. And Eddie Murphy is adding even more firepower to that already comedy-packed cast with the addition of Leslie Jones (SNL, “Supermarket Sweep“) and Tracy Morgan (SNL, “The Last O.G.“). On Wednesday night, Leslie will be on the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon to promote “Coming 2 America” and then on Thursday evening, it’s Tray’s turn to do the plugging when he appears on the Tonight Show.
Thursday evening is a really strong night for comedy guests in late night. Sacha Baron Cohen, who strikes fear in the heart of stupid American politicians everywhere, will be on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Later that night, Seth Meyers gives a virtual welcome to Ike Barinholtz who will be promoting his new film “Moxie” which is Amy Poehler’s directing debut and Lilly Singh for a little NBC late night crossover talk.
Also on Thursday, Pete Lee returns to the scene of one of his best comedy moments, the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. When Pete first performed on the Tonight Show, he was rewarded with a well-deserved, but unusual standing ovation for a stand up comic, but it was so impressive, Pete was invited back to the Tonight Show four more times in just two years after being deemed a Tonight Show regular by Jimmy Fallon.
Pete Lee has another comedy milestone to celebrate. This past week, Pete filmed his first hourlong stand up special. The special was filmed at the Tempe Improv in Arizona over the course of two shows this past Thursday night. Pete already had a Comedy Central Half Hour special on his resume, but this is his first 60 minute special. Pete still hasn’t announced which network will carry this hourlong event. Maybe we’ll find out Thursday on the Tonight Show.
On Friday, the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon has a new episode with a guest who’s already a hit in France and is now winning over American fans with his Netflix series. Omar Sy, the French comedian with a name like a Jedi, is already an award winning actor and comic in Europe.
Now Omar’s got a hit Netflix show called “Lupin.” In the streaming mystery thriller series, Omar Sy plays Assane Diop who draws his inspiration from Arsène Lupin, the fictional French gentleman rogue and thief. The first season of “Lupin” was released in January and the highly anticipated second season has already been shot and is due to premiere on Netflix this summer.
Remember to beware the Ides of March. Actually, if “Ides” are that dangerous, we should probably beware them every other month too.
