There’s some good news this week from the late night front. Most of our hosts are making their way back to work from vacation and they’re bringing some new comedy with them. This week, it’s only Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and James Corden who are still hanging the “Sorry, We’re Closed” sign on their studio doors while Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Conan and the Daily Show will have all new content.
Also, because the NBA Finals are tied at a game apiece as of Monday, we’re getting at least a 5th edition of “Jimmy Kimmel Live: Game Night.” Prime time JKL will be part of the NBA pre-game show on Wednesday and Friday nights this week before Games 3 and 4 respectively.
Looking at our comedy highlights this week, on Tuesday, Conan, who’s back this week from two weeks off, has two very funny guests. First, he’ll be sitting down with the always controversial and often topless Chelsea Handler for an interview. Then, Conan will have stand up from Rhys Nicholson. Team Coco has become the biggest importer of over-seas stand up comedy in late night and this time, he’s bringing one of Australia’s finest to American television on TBS. Rhys Nicholson became a comedy sensation after winning the Time Out Award for Best Newcomer at the Sydney Comedy Festival in Australia and since then he has performed in New York, London and at several prestigious festivals including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Dublin’s Vodafone Comedy Festival and the New Zealand Comedy Festival.
As a non-comedy side-note for Tuesday, Jimmy Kimmel benefits once again from his network ABC and Marvel movie studios both having the same parent company, Disney. JKL will continue its tradition of having an entire cast on the show to promote a film when Kimmel hosts the “X-Men” actors from the upcoming superhero flick, “Dark Phoenix” on Tuesday night.
On Wednesday, Stephen Colbert continues a tradition of his own by hosting another late night talk show host as his guest. James Corden, host of the Late Late Show on CBS will travel across the country to sit down for an interview with his lead-in, Stephen Colbert, on the Late Show.
Other Wednesday programming notes include “Jimmy Kimmel Live: Game Night” at 7pm before Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors on ABC. Jimmy Kimmel’s guest for the pre-game show will be Chadwick Boseman, who’s also well known in the Marvel Universe as Black Panther. And in a Wednesday night repeat, Jimmy Fallon is rerunning Kevin Hart’s latest appearance on the Tonight Show.
Thursday, Conan O’Brien is welcoming comedy and SNL legend Dana Carvey to his show for the full half-hour. Carvey is out promoting “The Secret Life of Pets 2” which is sure to be one of the biggest cartoon features of the 2019 Summer movie season.
Friday night at 7pm, it’s the NBA Finals Game 4 edition of “Jimmy Kimmel Live: Game Night“. Jimmy’s pre-game pre-show guests will be two people who totally ripped off the father-daughter broadcast team idea, Jamie Foxx and Corinne Foxx from the musical game show “Beat Shazam” on Fox.
Also Friday night, there’s a couple of great stand up performances that will re-air in late night repeats that are definitely worth catching again or for the first time if you missed their original airings. Journalist turned comedian Chloé Hilliard’s appearance on the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon is getting an encore. Chloé has been seen on “Last Comic Standing“, “Gotham Comedy Live” and on Comedy Central. Then on a repeat of Late Night with Seth Meyers, Janine Brito is getting a second airing of her appearance. Janine is best known for her work on “Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell” on FX.
Enjoy some late nights this week and remember, sleep is for the weak.
