Who is On Late Night Tonight in Comedy: Week of July 6, 2020

Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?

This week, one late night television show returns to a tradition made popular in the days of the Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. While most of our late night talk shows remain on vacation this week, Jimmy Kimmel Live is back with new shows, but without Jimmy Kimmel. He will be on extended vacation until late September. He’ll be back after he hosts the Primetime Emmy Awards on September 20th.

Until then, JKL will have a series of guest hosts and the first ones, who are beginning this week, have been announced. Johnny Carson used to take a lot of vacations when he hosted the Tonight Show and the King of Late Night never suffered from a confidence problem, so he had guest hosts filling in all the time including people like David Brenner, Jerry Lewis, Bill Cosby, David Letterman, Joan Rivers (until their relationship hit the rocks) and Jay Leno.

From this week’s schedule, it looks like each guest host will do two shows each through the rest of the summer. And those shows will follow the same social distancing protocols as Kimmel does with guests appearing remotely and only half-hour long shows.

Starting Monday and Tuesday, the first guest host on Jimmy Kimmel Live will be Anthony Anderson, the star of the ABC hit series “Black-ish.” On Monday, Anthony Anderson will host his co-star from “Black-ish“, Tracee Ellis Ross and the Mayor of Washington D.C. Muriel Bowser. No offense to the daughter of the legendary Diana Ross and the Honorable Mayor of D.C., but it’s Tuesday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live that looks really interesting.

On Tuesday’s JKL, Anthony Anderson’s guests will be D.L. Hughley who recently collapsed on stage while performing stand up and then testing positive for the Covid-19 virus. So Tuesday, we’ll get to see how D.L.’s doing when he face-times from home.

Also, NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace will be a guest on Tuesday’s JKL. Bubba was just embroiled in a controversy when an alleged “noose” was found hanging in the garage of NASCAR’s only full-time African-American driver and reported by Bubba’s crew. The “noose” in Bubba’s garage turned out not to be a “noose” and the controversy wasn’t all that controversial. This will be Bubba Wallace’s first late night appearance since the incident that grabbed headlines, so it will be interesting hear what he has say about it.

On Wednesday and Thursday of this week, it’s Billy Eichner’s turn to guest host Jimmy Kimmel Live. His guests on Wednesday will include the very funny Amy Schumer and Jaime Harrison who is running against Lindsey “Lady G” Graham for the Senate in South Carolina. Then on Thursday, Billy Eichner welcomes the fabulous Billy Porter from “Pose” on Netflix and German singer Kim Petras to Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Conan O’Brien is the only other late night talker doing new shows this week. Team Coco’s guests include Will Ferrell on Monday. He’ll be talking about his new comedy movie “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” which is available for streaming now on Netflix. Then Wednesday, one of late night’s most popular guests since the shutdown began, Lisa Kudrow, will be on Conan to discuss her new series “Space Force” starring Steve Carell which is also available on Netflix.

Late Night with Seth Meyers will be in reruns this week while Seth is still on stay-cation and his staff has selected some shows with great comedy guests for this Best Of week. Monday’s Late Night repeat features Amy Schumer with her husband, Celebrity Chef Chris Fischer and British comedy great Graham Norton. Patton Oswalt will appear on Tuesday’s replay of Late Night. Wednesday’s Late Night encore episode welcomes Leslie Jones. And on Thursday, Seth Meyers welcomes Ramy Youssef on a rerun of Late Night.

If you’re a big fan of Saturday Night Live, then Friday is the night for you in late night. That probably doesn’t make much sense until you hear that Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig will be guests on a repeat of the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.

And former SNL cast member Kevin Nealon who co-stars on “Man Without a Plan” will be on a rerun of A Little Late with Lilly Singh on Friday night. Please enjoy this repeat of “Lilly Singh” now because it originally aired a couple of weeks before CBS cancelled “Man Without a Plan.” We don’t suggest Kevin Nealon watch it though.

And on that depressing note, have a great week everyone!
