Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?

This week in late night, NBC airs the Olympics, ABC repeats Kimmel’s guest hosts, and HBO welcomes back Bill Maher.

Last week, the kick-off of the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo knocked Saturday Night Live out of its regular time slot. This week, not only is NBC bumping its regularly planned SNL rerun off the schedule again, but it’s also taking the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers off the calendar as well for coverage of the 2021 Olympics from Tokyo.

So, with the Tonight Show and Late Night both pre-empted, along with “Conan” being gone, Jimmy Kimmel on his annual summer vacation and the Daily Show with Trevor Noah on sabbatical until September 13th, this week is the perfect convergence for the CBS late night shows to pounce on the competition like the late night leopards they are. But instead, Colbert and Corden will also be on vacation.

Jimmy Kimmel went on his break with a cast of very funny and talented stars lined up to guest host JKL in the style of the ultra-confident Johnny Carson. And even though, Kimmel left his guest hosts the keys to the shop so that it wouldn’t be a summer full of Jimmy Kimmel Live reruns, JKL is still showing repeats this week. However, ABC chose replays of shows with guest hosts from the past couple of weeks. Also, the network is recycling some its prime time episodes of Jimmy Kimmel Live which aired before each game of the NBA Finals to re-air this week.

Guest hosts on this week’s Jimmy Kimmel Live reruns include Anthony Anderson on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. We’re recommending Wednesday’s JKL repeat as a rerun to watch. Anthony Anderson’s guests on this JKL replay include Cedric the Entertainer and Chris Tucker.

The week ends with two fantastic JKL encore presentations too. Thursday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live repeat is guest hosted by Arsenio Hall. He’s still riding the high of co-starring in the Eddie Murphy comedy sequel “Coming 2 America” on Amazon Prime. Almost like it’s the 1990s all over again. Arsenio’s guest on Thursday’s repeat JKL is former SNL cast member and current Master of a 1,001 Voices, Jay Pharoah. Friday also has a great Best of Jimmy Kimmel Live replay scheduled on ABC. Kimmel’s guest host is the hilarious Phoebe Robinson with her guest, the outrageous Chelsea Handler.

Stephen Colbert has picked two of his best shows to replay on his vacation this week. Wednesday’s Late Show repeat on CBS features the never not-funny Jim Gaffigan. He was promoting his new Amazon Prime animated comedy, “Luca” and his stand up comedy return to the road this summer which he’s calling “Jim Gaffigan: The Fun Tour.” It’s the perfect name for a Gaffigan tour.

Thursday’s Late Show with Stephen Colbert rerun has Keegan-Michael Key as Colbert’s guest. Keegan-Michael was having a career resurgence when he originally appeared on the Late Show. He had achieved a career goal by being selected to host Saturday Night Live this past season and his new musical comedy series “Schmigadoon!” had debuted on Apple TV+.

And here’s something different for this week in late night, we actual have something new to offer in our highlights. The one new late night show this week is Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO. While the other hosts have the week off, Bill Maher is back from his month long summer vacation and ready to dive back into the sometimes hilarious, sometimes tragic world of American politics. Real Time with Bill Maher is back this Friday at 10pm et on HBO.
