Who is On Late Night Tonight in Comedy: Week of July 13, 2020

Who’s on Late Night Tonight in Comedy?
After a couple of weeks of late night repeats, most of our hosts are back from vacation this week. The exceptions being James Corden who we can only hope is not off shooting “Cats 2” and Lilly Singh whose show is on so late on NBC that who cares if it’s a rerun or not by the time it finally comes on TV.
And of course, Jimmy Kimmel is continuing his hiatus till late September, with guest hosts filling in for him on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The producers at JKL have wisely decided to so far use comedians to fill in for Kimmel. Last week, Kimmel’s substitutes were Anthony Anderson and Billy Eichner who both got solid reviews on social media.
This week includes 3 hilarious guest hosts on Jimmy Kimmel Live including one who we’re especially excited to see in action as a late night host. It kicks off on Monday with Iliza Shlesinger filling in for Kimmel. Iliza, you’ll remember, is the first woman and youngest person ever to win NBC’s comedy reality competition show, “Last Comic Standing“. She also has 5 Netflix stand up comedy specials to her name. You can catch her latest “Iliza Shlesinger: Unveiled” on the streamer now.
On Tuesday, a very funny person who’s just as successful behind the camera as she is behind the microphone on the stand up stage is taking over JKL. Whitney Cummings will be hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday and one of her guests will be Eric Andre whose new stand up special “Eric Andre: Legalize Everything” is now streaming on Netflix. In “Legalize Everything“, Eric Andre does what he does best, combining surrealism with stand up comedy. Plus, the special has an ending you will never forget.
Wednesday and Thursday will be a very interesting experiment in late night television when Sebastian Maniscalco steps in to host Jimmy Kimmel Live. Sebastian is such an extraordinarily unique “guest” on late night shows, it will be nothing short of amazing to see what he does when he’s given the job of “host”. On Wednesday’s JKL, the roles are reversed when a pair of daytime talk show hosts will be Sebastian Maniscalco’s guests when Kelly Ripa & Ryan Seacrest appear remotely on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Then on Thursday, Sebastian welcomes “A-Rod”, Alex Rodriguez for a facetime conversation on JKL.
Tuesday night, Jimmy Fallon who returns this week with new “At Home” editions of the Tonight Show has a comedian who is now an author. His guest will be Saturday Night Live cast member and head writer as well as Weekend Update anchorman Colin Jost who will be plugging his new book, “A Very Punchable Face: A Memoir.” The new autobiography, available this Tuesday, July 14th, includes more than just comedy. There’s also an account of Colin Jost’s mom and her heroic efforts as a doctor at Ground Zero in NYC during the 9-11 attacks.
Stephen Colbert hasn’t been booking many comedy guests lately and that was even before his past two weeks of vacation. On Wednesday, it looks like Colbert is trying to make up for a comedy slight. He’s booked Ricky Gervais and W. Kamau Bell on Wednesday’s Late Show From Home on CBS. Then on Thursday, Stephen Colbert is back to being seriously political when he welcomes the former “Dixie Chicks” who are now known as simply “The Chicks” after their conscience told them to change their show business name and brand after all these years.
Also on Thursday, NBC late night talk shows have booked two of late night’s favorite funny guests. First, Jimmy Fallon welcomes Jim Carrey to the Tonight Show remotely. Jim Carrey will be plugging his first novel called “Memoirs and Misinformation“. The semi-fictional work includes a main character named “Jim Carrey” and several real life celebrity names, but only a few of the stories actually happened. Good luck figuring out which ones are real.
Later on Thursday night, Martin Short will appear via facetime on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Hopefully, we’ll get more details on the new Martin Short / Steve Martin half-hour series coming to Hulu. So far we know it’s called “Only Murders In The Building” and it’s a comedy (naturally) starring Martin & Short based on the amateur true crime sleuth craze happening today.
This takes us into the weekend where if you’re going to catch one Saturday Night Live rerun this summer, you might as well make it one that was an “Eleganza Extravaganza”. RuPaul Charles from “RuPaul’s Drag Race” fame, and so many other fierce projects, hosts an encore presentation of Saturday Night Live with musical guest Justin Bieber this Saturday at 11:30pm et on NBC.
This week while you’re enjoying some late night comedy, remember to laugh at least 6 feet apart from each other and wear a mask while you’re chuckling.
