Hosting tonight at 11:30pm and live across all of America’s time zones is Kumail Nanjiai, who is best known as code programmer and resident of the the Hacker Hostel tech incubator, Dinesh Chugtai on the hit HBO series “Silicon Valley“. This year however, comedy fans got introduced to a whole new side of Kumail Nanjiani with the 2017 release of his smash independent film, “The Big Sick“.
“The Big Sick” was written by Kumail and his real life wife Emily V. Gordon and it’s based on the unusual real life story of their relationship. It’s a story of true love versus serious illness, parental expectations and religious differences all set against the backdrop of Kumail Nanjiani’s stand up and acting career. The film was made on a budget of just $5 million and has already grossed over 10 times that amount and it also currently has a 98% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “The Big Sick” was directed by Michael Showalter and produced by Judd Apatow for an extra strong comedy seal of approval. “The Big Sick” starring Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter and Ray Romano is available On Demand and on Blu-ray and DVD now.
Kumail has also had roles in major motion picture comedies including “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” (where he had movie-stealing scene), “Central Intelligence” with Kevin Hart and The Rock, and The LEGO Ninjago Movie. Besides “Silicon Valley” on HBO, his TV work includes appearances on “Bob’s Burgers“, “Portlandia“, “Community“, “Kroll Show“, and his own Comedy Central series, “The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail“. And he’s already been named the 2017 CinemaCon Comedy Star of the Year. Not too shabby. There’s been people with a lot less credentials who have hosted SNL, some have even gone on to the White House.
As for this week’s show, with the Harvey Weinstein sexual harrassment scandal being the biggest story of the past seven days, it would make sense for SNL to cover that situation, especially since they planned on hitting it last week and those jokes were scrapped from the show. Plus, the NFL National Anthem kneeling controversy seems to be reaching full-strength yet again, so perhaps look for a sketch in Commissioner Roger Goodell’s office where everyone brainstorms suitable, yet ridiculous alternatives to the kneeling protests and with no new shows announced yet for the rest of the month, this could very well end up being Saturday Night Live‘s Halloween episode. Paging David S. Pumpkins!
In the promos for tonight’s fresh SNL, Kumail Nanjiani gets lost looking for the stage at Studio 8-H including an ill-timed trip to wigs and makeup and one of MSNBC’s news shows . Then in the next set, Kumail appears with cast member Aidy Bryant and musical guest P!nk where they discuss favorite colors and decide who is and isn’t an inspiration to people everywhere. Also below, from the Saturday Night Live Instagram account, watch behind-the-scenes as Kumail gets measured for his wig bubble for the many looks he’ll be sporting on tonight’s SNL.
