Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: May 1, 2021

SNL is still on vacation tonight, so spin your chair around to watch Nick Jonas from “The Voice” host a repeat episode of Saturday Night Live!

For tonight’s Saturday Night Live rerun, SNL EP Lorne Michaels is taking us all the way back to February 27, 2021. That was the evening when Nick Jonas joined dozens of select performers to ever be both the host and musical guest on the same night on Saturday Night Live. Nick joined the “Double-Duty” ranks of iconic entertainers like Paul Simon, Frank Zappa, Dolly Parton, J-Lo, Stevie Wonder, Justin Timberlake and Desi Arnaz. Yes, that Desi Arnaz. Lucy’s husband. That’s just to name a few.

The list of projects Nick Jonas was promoting when he hosted Saturday Night Live this past February was enormous. His 4th studio album “Spaceman” was being released a couple of weeks after he hosted the show. Nick had a new movie coming out in March, 2021 called “Chaos Walking” where he co-starred with Tom “Spider-Man” Holland and Daisy “Those last three ‘Star Wars‘ movies that people really hated” Ridley. And Nick was returning as a coach on a new season of the singing competition reality show, “The Voice” on NBC.

If this was a job interview, Nick Jonas also already had plenty of Saturday Night Live experience. Nick and his brothers, formally know as the Jonas Brothers, have been performing on Saturday Night Live as the musical guests as far back as 2009. The three-piece Jonas boys also played SNL as musical guest in 2019 where they worked with host Alec Baldwin in the famous “Oldest Jonas” or “Fourth Jonas” sketch as it’s known. And Nick was the SNL musical guest as a one-piece in 2016. In tonight’s encore episode, Nick is the first Jonas Brother to host Saturday Night Live.

The show gets started this evening with SNL cast member Kate McKinnon finding herself in a familiar place, the SNL Cold Open. She’s the cast member most known for her impersonations, despite master impressionists Melissa Villaseñor and Chloe Fineman both being in the cast.

Kate opens the show at the 11:30pm et mark as Dr. Anthony Fauci, our country’s Covid Cover Boy throughout the pandemic. The leading source of information about the Coronavirus in the U.S., Dr. Fauci (McKinnon), is not only addressing the public about the new Covid vaccines, but also hosting a game show called, “So You Think You Can Get the Vaccine.”

Putting the vaccine up for grabs on a TV game show makes sense to McKinnon’s Dr. Fauci because as he puts it, “Americans will only want to get it if it means someone else can’t.” Contestants hoping to win the then-new inoculation have to face a panel of judges made up of three prominent U.S. governors; California Guv Gavin Newsom played by cast member Alex Moffat, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo played admirably by cast member Pete Davidson and Michigan Governor and almost-militia-kidnap-victim Gretchen Whitmer who is now deservedly drinking on the job.

The game show contestants are compiled of everyday Americans hoping to sway the judges into giving them the Covid shot. The participants include cast member Heidi Gardner as a Michigander with herpes, cast member Ego Nwodim as a senior citizen (or is she?), Melissa Villaseñor as a pregnant woman, featured player Bowen Yang as a longtime smoker, cast member Mikey Day as a confused granddad and cast member Aidy Bryant as a certain U.S. Senator / stand up comic from Texas who pissed everyone off when he jetted away to sunny Mexico while the rest of his state froze without power and water during a major ice storm. Who will win the precious vaccine? Watch tonight to find out.

Host Nick Jonas gets some help during his debut SNL monologue this evening from one of his brothers. Sorry folks. It’s not the other cute one. There’s three Jonas Brothers which comprise the band and we totally stan two of them, but no, we had to get the other third. Kevin. The host’s big brother is in the audience to not only offer his kid-bro moral support, but to hopefully squash his own paranoia about the band breaking up again. Watch for Kevin later in the show where he has another very important job to handle for Nicky. Our host wraps his monologue with a musical toast to all of our resiliency during the pandemic.

Nick Jonas plays a variety of characters in tonight’s sketches in this repeat episode of Saturday Night Live. The first post-monologue sketch has a hilarious premise where Nick gets to put his real-life fitness skills to use when he plays a trainer in a workout mirror. However, he’s not alone inside that mirror. Cast member Kate McKinnon scores the win in this sketch as well.

The Grammy winning and Golden Globe nominated singer-songwriter, and Kids Choice Award nominated actor and now SNL host, Nick Jonas also plays Prince Charming in a “Cinderella” sketch which is pretty disturbing and not just because of the fart jokes. Cast members Kenan Thompson and Aidy Bryant are great in this sketch which turns a Disney classic into a horrifying story about mouse-babies.

Late in the show, on tonight’s SNL encore, Nick Jonas also plays a high school kid at an amusement park trying to sit with his girlfriend on the rides while also trying to ditch their single friend, “Cuck” and his life-size stuffed “guy from ‘Soul‘”. Nick gets to play himself opposite of Ego Nwodim’s breakout recurring character on “The Dionne Warwick Talk Show“. Watch for featured cast member Andrew Dismukes start improvising with a cockatiel. And then, Nick wraps up the night in a bar sketch with Kate McKinnon as a pair of strangers trying to seduce each other in very odd ways.

Watch for two SNL Shorts in tonight’s rerun and both are music videos. Our first SNL Short in this evening’s rerun showcases the singing talents of the Saturday Night Live female cast members. The women are doing a music video about one of our country’s most popular pastimes, watching “Murder Shows.” It’s a salute to the non-stop binging of horrific serial killer content currently streaming on all platforms including shows like “The Jinx“, “Making a Murderer” and “Evil Genius.”

In the next SNL Short, it’s the Saturday Night Live guys’ turn to sing. This music video involves a bachelor party, a pair of strippers (Heidi Gardner & Ego Nwodim) and the repeated singing of the word “boner” over and over again. This SNL Short will make you wonder how long the NBC censors had to ponder over this one?

The Weekend Update team of Colin Jost and Michael Che started their newscast commenting on the $1.9 trillion dollar stimulus package that Congress passed in the middle of the night back at the end of February. The co-anchors lament the Democrats not being able to push through a minimum wage increase and a riled-up Michael Che is pissed that it’s the Dems who never get angry enough to storm the Capitol and take a dump in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s desk.

Other stories Jost & Che are lampooning tonight include Donald Trump speaking at the CPAC convention, Ted Cruz in Orlando, President Biden wanting to use churches to distribute the vaccine, a new ad featuring lactating breasts, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine getting approved, a revival of the TV show “Frasier” in the works, a UFO sighting, the Coronavirus lowering life expectancy, a 20 million year-old fossil being found, a NYC steakhouse’s new arrangement with the wax museum, and Disney+ putting a warning on episodes of “The Muppet Show.”

Kenan Thompson brings one of his most popular Weekend Update characters back to the news desk in tonight’s repeat. He plays NBA pain-in-the-ass LaVar Ball. The basketball-dad arrives to promote all things “Big Baller Brand” and to campaign for his son, Charlotte Hornets point-guard LaMelo Ball to be named NBA Rookie of the Year.

Cast member Cecily Strong brings one of her new popular recurring SNL characters to Weekend Update in this evening’s repeat. She plays the Congressional Conspiracy Theorist and all-around Q-Nut who desperately needs her roots touched up, Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene. “MTG” is on Update to talk about gender roles and discriminating against Trans people. “Follow the science!”

Those SNL promos that originally aired leading up to tonight’s repeat episode are available below for you to chuckle with all over again. The promos feature host Nick Jonas joined by cast members Ego Nwodim and Bowen Yang. Nicky gets two SNL castmates in his promos since he’s doing the famous Saturday Night Live Double-Duty night and acting as his own musical guest.

First, Bowen and Ego try to bolster Nick Jonas’ confidence by throwing every old entertainment cliché at him that they can. Those classic New York City Broadway platitudes seem to be working on Nick. Then, it’s the debut of Bowen and Ego’s new single, “You Idiot.” Some people just can’t stand a little musical competition.

Nick Jonas returns to Saturday Night Live as host and musical guest of an SNL rerun from two months ago. Hopefully, you missed it enough in that short of a time to want to watch it all over again. It happens tonight at 11:30pm et on NBC.

And Saturday Night Live returns LIVE next week with a controversial first-time host. Covid-denier, anti-vaxxer, and CEO & Founder of Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk will be making his Saturday Night Live hosting debut next Saturday, May 8th on NBC.
