Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: June 12, 2021

Tonight, the SNL repeat “Messiah” arrives with a Saturday Night Live rerun hosted by Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya!

Hallelujah! Tonight we get Kaluuya! This evening’s Saturday Night Live episode was the second leg in an incredible start to 2021 for British actor Daniel Kaluuya. Back in February, he won his first ever Golden Globe award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for playing activist Fred Hampton, the chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party in Shaka King’s film, “Judas and the Black Messiah.”

Then on Oscar night, April 25, 2021, Daniel Kaluuya won his first Academy Award for acting in a supporting role for the same part. And nestled right in between those two monumental award nights, Daniel Kaluuya hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time on Saturday, April 3th. That’s the show replaying tonight at 11:30pm et on NBC. But before we talk about what’s happening on tonight’s repeat, there’s some SNL news to report.

Saturday Night Live is off for the summer, but hopefully there was someone in the office when some really good news came in for executive producer Lorne Michaels. For the first time in the history of the show, (and that’s going back 46 years), SNL was the number one entertainment program among adults 18-49. And that’s not just in late night people. Saturday Night Live was numbero uno in that demo in all of commercial television. Congratulations Lorne, cast and crew!

There’s also some SNL news regarding the cast. One cast member who is rumored to be leaving the show added some more fuel to that rumor fire. Cast member Pete Davidson was part of a comedy actor round table conversation for the Hollywood Reporter and he was asked about Kenan Thompson and his legendary 18 year run as an SNL cast member and the prospect of doing that himself. Pete’s answer was pretty direct. He said, “Yeah, I’m good. I’m surprised I made it to seven. I’m ready to hang up the jersey. Kenan’s like fuckin’ Karl Malone out there.” You know Pete’s serious about leaving when he starts using basketball metaphors.

In the same interview, Pete Davidson talked about learning from his mistakes while away from the show during the pandemic and coming into this latest season with a new outlook. However, that didn’t last too long because he also complained about not being given many sketches on SNL and always having to play the dumb character. These are complaints he’s vocalized quite often in the past before he got this new point of view. And they don’t sound like the words of a movie star who sticking around to do more television.

That’s the latest on what’s going on behind-the-scenes at Saturday Night Live. And that brings us back to this summer of reruns and the episode of SNL re-airing tonight. To open this evening’s show, Saturday Night Live called upon one of its sophomore featured players, Chloe Fineman and her impressive arsenal of celebrity impressions.

Tonight’s Saturday Night Live replay opens with a talk show sketch hosted by Britney Spears via Chloe Fineman. The talk show is called “Oops, You Did It Again” and it’s a place where Britney’s guests are people caught up in public controversies and she decides if they are or are “not that innocent.”

The dubious guests on “Oops, You Did It Again” are Lil Nas X (cast member Chris Redd) discussing his Satan-friendly music video for his song “Montero“, Pepé Le Pew (cast member Kate McKinnon) who was edited out of the “Space Jam” sequel for his part in assault culture throughout his cartoon career, and Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz (cast member Pete Davidson) who’s facing accusations of being in an improper relationship with an underage girl.

This SNL Cold Open doesn’t kick the show off with a lot of energy. And there’s not many laughs and even less enthusiasm leading up to the moment when it came time to shout, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night.” An exclamation point wasn’t even necessary at the end of the previous sentence. That’s how low-energy the show starts tonight.

Host Daniel Kaluuya takes the stage for his debut SNL monologue in this evening’s repeat with a lot more passion than the SNL Cold Open had to start the show. He’s also makes a bold new Saturday Night Live fashion statement by wearing a warm-up suit jacket underneath a suit jacket. #Daring.

In his monologue, Daniel Kaluuya speaks on being both Black and British and takes a heavy shot at the Royal Family. That opening joke even draws some shock and groans from the studio audience. Kaluuya also compares British racism versus American Racism and brings up some good points.

We mentioned all the awards and accolades being showered on Daniel Kaluuya for his acting performances this year and he brings up his winning moment at the 2021 virtual Golden Globes ceremony back in February. From the “It’s Nice that He Can Laugh About It Now” Department, Kaluuya jokes about when he won the Golden Globe award via Zoom for his part in “Judas and the Black Messiah” and he was left on mute so no one could hear what he was saying in his victory speech the moment after he won.

Daniel Kaluuya wraps up his monologue with a very sweet story tonight that gives the audience plenty of feels. It’s the opposite of the joke that elicited groans at the start of the monologue. This anecdote will really make longtime SNL cast member Kenan Thompson’s day and make him even more endearing to America (and Great Britain), if that’s possible.

Post-monologue, the first sketch is “Will You Take It?“. It’s the second game show sketch of the night and this SNL episode is only 18 minutes old at this point. Host Daniel Kaluuya plays the host who is also a doctor and he’s trying to get his high-risk relatives to take the Covid vaccine. His family is played by cast members Ego Nwodim, Kenan Thompson, Chris Redd and featured player Punkie Johnson. The doctor’s fam is offered a lot of money just to take the vaccine. Will they do it!? When you find out the answer to a lot of their questions is “Tuskegee”, you can probably guess what they’ll do.

Daniel Kaluuya also plays a guy meeting his girlfriend’s (Heidi Gardner) mother and father (Kate McKinnon & Mikey Day) for the first time. The couple enjoy dinner and game night at the folks’ house until the mother decides she needs to clean up instead of playing the board game. Kate McKinnon is perfect as the Mom who feels ignored and left out when they don’t play her suggested game. Then, she begins some very loud housekeeping while everyone else tries to play the game. Some of you watching might recognize your own mom in this sketch tonight.

Later in a dinner party sketch, Kaluuya plays the proud father of a medical school student. That is until he finds out his son (Chris Redd) has changed his major to creative writing. This evening’s host also plays a frat guy who wants to invite everyone’s mothers on the big fraternity ski trip.

There’s also a bizarre sketch towards the end of the night where Daniel Kaluuya plays a man who takes his dog to a dog park and runs into trouble with the other dog owners. And tonight’s repeat wraps up with a birthday party sketch where Kaluuya plays the half-brother of the guest of honor and provides the entertainment on his upright bass. It’s odd. Really really odd.

We only get one SNL Short in tonight’s rerun and it’s the creation of cast member Kyle Mooney who plays the Gen-Z host of “Prank Posse“, a social media practical joke show. The short is called “Viral Apology Video.” Kyle’s blonde wig and super-douchey attitude will instantly remind you of Logan and Jake Paul.

Tonight’s repeat edition of Weekend Update starts with anchorman Colin Jost putting the boots to Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz who’s been accused of having a sexual relationship with an underaged girl. Because, according to Jost, “Gaetz believes that only voters should have to show ID.”

Anchorman Michael Che leads off with talking about President Joe Biden’s $2 trillion infrastructure plan which some Democrats are calling the “New New Deal”. Che adds, “…I thought we weren’t allowed to make fun of his stutter.”

Weekend Update also covers the following stories; Delta Airlines publicly criticizing Georgia’s new restrictive voting laws, Joe Biden possibly cancelling student debt, the Trumps launching a site to preserve the legacy of the former “Commander in Beef” (nickname courtesy of Jimmy Kimmel), Starbucks 50th anniversary, the J&J and Pfizer vaccines, the men’s U.S. soccer team, a nude female rock climber, National Peanut Butter Day, a woman cutting her boyfriend’s penis off, along with lots more Matt Gaetz punchlines.

Two characters return to the Weekend Update desk tonight that always make Colin Jost break character. And tonight is no different. It’s the return of Vaneta & Wylene Starkie of Smokery Farms, played by cast members Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant respectively. They have some gift basket ideas just in time for Easter. And don’t worry vegans, they serving up guilt-free meats from “animals that genuinely deserve to be killed.”

Cast member Alex Moffat makes another visit to WU as “A Guy Who Just Bought a Boat.” He’s on tonight’s SNL rerun to talk about the dating scene now that places are starting to reopen after the pandemic shutdown. Then cast members Heidi Gardner and Mikey Day arrive on Update as a couple recently in the news. They’re newlyweds where the groom is 26 years old while his billionaire blushing bride is 106! When it comes to playing elderly, Heidi is one of the best on Saturday Night Live.

If you want to relive the promos for tonight’s SNL repeat, just look below. In the promos, host Daniel Kaluuya is joined by musical guest St. Vincent and cast member Aidy Bryant. The throuple finally decide which is better, reading or watching television? Sorry books. Next, we find out exactly what everyone will be doing on this evening’s show. Sounds like Aidy Bryant is going to have her hands full.

Academy Award winner Daniel Kaluuya is hosting an encore presentation of Saturday Night Live from back in April. His musical guest will be St. Vincent. And this all happens tonight at 11pm et on NBC.
