Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: June 1, 2019

Tonight, Saturday Night Live is a repeat and it’s hosted by two time Academy Award winner Emma Thompson!

Unfortunately, the sentence, “Tonight, Saturday Night Live is a repeat” is going to be repeated itself for quite some time while we wait for a new season of SNL to debut in the fall. During this time, the cast and crew from Saturday Night Live are off doing other jobs like shooting movies, doing stand up tours or even in the case of cast member Pete Davidson, becoming a fashion model. Pete was spotted working the catwalk as a model at famed designer Alexander Wang’s New York City fashion show by E! News on Friday at Rockefeller Plaza, which is also the home of SNL. So if we’re keeping track, right now Pete Davidson is winning the Saturday Night Live “How did you spend your summer?” competition.

Tonight’s SNL which airs at 11:30pm et on NBC, features Emma Thompson, a two-time Oscar winner and star of one this summer’s big budget comedies, “Men in Black: International” (in theaters Friday, June 14th) as host for her very first time. This episode of Saturday Night Live originally aired just three weeks ago on Saturday, May 11, 2019.

The show starts out, as usual, on a political note with a “Meet the Press” sketch as the SNL – Cold Open. Cast member Kyle Mooney returns as NBC News moderator Chuck Todd with cast members Beck Bennett as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Cecily Strong as Republican Senator from Maine Susan Collins and Kate McKinnon back as President Trump’s Senate BFF Lindsey Graham. Outside of Mooney, these three SNL repertory players absolutely nail their political impersonations. The faux “Meet the Press” panel discuss the theme “What would it take for President Trump to finally lose your support?” Tune in tonight to see just how far and insane things would have to get in order for one of these loyalists to finally turn their back on their supreme leader.

For the monologue, the British born host takes the stage looking a lot like Dr. Who on a day off in a trench coat, tracksuit pants and sneakers. Emma Thompson then explains that this edition of Saturday Night Live is the SNL – Mother’s Day Episode and she gets some very special help with her Mother’s Day monologue. It’s one of the funnier SNL monologues of SNL – Season 44 and it’s worth it to watch all over again tonight to see the special cameo appearances.

The most memorable sketch of the night is a big budget spoof of Disney’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast” with Beck Bennett as the Beast, cast member Cecily Strong as Belle and host Emma Thompson as the living tea pot, Mrs. Potts. What starts off as a Disney classic quickly turns with a scandalous twist that most “Beauty and the Beast” fans never considered. Let’s just say it’s involves a combination of bestiality and housewares sex.

Other sketches tonight include cast member Leslie Jones as a relative of Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, who is getting some etiquette lessons from a Buckingham Palace manners expert played Emma Thompson in order to prepare for the royal christening of Meghan and Prince Harry’s new baby boy. There’s also a “PBS Cinema Classics” sketch featuring the host along with Kate McKinnon as two 1950’s rival film starlets who each insist of having the last line in every scene they do. McKinnon, Thompson and cast member Aidy Bryant team up as a panel of judges whose only knowledge of the law is that judges bang their gavels a lot in a “People’s Court” style sketch called “Judge Court” which has also has a cameo that made the audience squeal. Emma Thompson also appears as a family psychotherapist in a daytime talk show sketch where the theme is “Millennials Gone Wild.” And the show wraps tonight with a film flub sketch called “Wait a Second, That Shouldn’t Be There!” which is perfectly timed with the then-recent continuity errors happening on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” which had been in the news.

The SNL – Digital Shorts you’ll see tonight include a special one for Mother’s Day called “The Perfect Mother” which reminds us that motherhood isn’t as easy as some moms make it look. Another short in this SNL repeat is a parody of the Food Network’s “Chopped” which just gets plain weird while trying to shock us.

On Weekend Update, the Saturday Night Live news team of Colin Jost and Michael Che tackle the big story of the day which was that Donald Trump “may not be the financial genius that no one ever really thought he was” with reports that back in the 80s and 90s, the Trumpster loss over $1 billion according to his tax documents. Jost makes comparisons between Trump and R. Kelly and mocks out Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” for their coverage of the story while Che jokes about the financial losses from the very, very short-lived Trump Airlines.

Jost & Che also take on President Trump’s insane remarks at a campaign rally in the Florida panhandle, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s comments on the Mueller Report, Donald Trump Jr. being served a subpoena to appear before the Senate, the President’s trade war with China, First Lady Melania Trump’s “Be Best” campaign, the Red Sox’ visit to the White House, the Georgia abortion ban, Jeff Bezo’s Amazon lunar module debut, top baby names, the airport named worst in America, a Costco robbery, Facebook’s new secret crush feature and the case of the Florida man insisting on keeping his “I Eat Ass” bumper sticker on his vehicle.

Visiting the Weekend Update news desk on this SNL repeat is cast member Heidi Gardner as Teen Movie Critic Bailey Gismert who shyly reviews “Disney’s Aladdin” and “Detective Pikachu.” And in an “aww moment” for Mother’s Day, Pete Davidson brings his real life mom with him on Weekend Update to talk about their new living arrangements. Amy Davidson totally charmed the audience in the studio and on social media in a successful effort to endear Pete to SNL fans after a tumultuous season on Saturday Night Live.
