Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: February 27, 2021

Tonight, SNL is live with a brand new Saturday Night Live hosted by one-third of the Jonas Brothers, Nick Jonas!

For the 9th time this season, Saturday Night Live will hand the reins to the show over to a first-time host. Tonight, Nick Jonas makes his rookie SNL hosting debut. And this evening, Nick will be pulling the famous SNL double-duty. He’ll not only be the host of tonight’s brand new episode, but also the musical guest as well.

It’s Nick who’s getting all the SNL love in his family. The Jonas Brothers have been the musical guest on SNL in the past, but it’s Nick who’s been a solo musical guest act, and he’s the first one to graduate to hosting the show. Hopefully, this doesn’t cause any family jealousy. After all, naturally we all thought that Joe Jonas would be the breakout star from this boy band. And not a “boy band” in the traditional sense. These guys actually play their instruments.

The Jonas Brothers are known for such song hits as “Sucker“, “Year 3000“, “Hold On“, “Burnin’ Up“, “Lovebug” and “Paranoid.” In the band, Nick and his brother Joe take turns handling lead vocals while their older brother Kevin plays guitar and basically plays the Eric Trump role in the family. There’s also another much younger Jonas Brother who grew up known as the “Bonus Jonas” who isn’t part of the band. So, that must make him the Barron Trump of the Jonas family.

The BJs (Brothers Jonas) have always gotten in on the comedy fun when they’ve performed on SNL. Nick Jonas and his brothers first appeared as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live back in 2009 during SNL – Season 34 on an episode with Alec Baldwin hosting. It was their first experience doing SNL sketch comedy when they appeared in a sketch called “The Oldest Jonas” where host Alec Baldwin played Gary Jonas, the oldest brother who was being kicked out of the family band. They also filmed an SNL Digital Short for that show where they held a dark and mystical secret for staying young.

Next in Nick Jonas’ SNL career was performing as a musical guest by himself as a solo artist in 2016 when Julia Louis-Dreyfus hosted Saturday Night Live during SNL – Season 41. Nick got to act in a sketch that night as well as appear in the famous SNL Short known as “Pool Boy” which was the first ever appearance of cast member Pete Davidson’s very popular “Chad” character. “Okay.”

The most recent Saturday Night Live musical guest appearance for the Jonas boys was during SNL – Season 44 in 2019, a full decade after making their Saturday Night Live debut. All 3 brothers appeared in the “Judge Court” sketch with host Emma Thompson and cast members Kate McKinnon and Aidy Bryant who adopted the Jonas Brothers as their own sons.

Besides appearing on stage singing, performing and making young girls as well as older gay guys swoon, the Jonases have a background in comedy. Kids who came of age in the late aughts and early ’10s (is that a thing?) got to know Nick Jonas and watch him and his brothers on the Disney Channel in their own G-rated comedy series including “Jonas” (2009), “Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream” (2008) and the Disney Channel “Camp Rock” made-for-TV movies.

Earlier this season, John Mulaney hosted Saturday Night Live and announced he had absolutely nothing to promote that night. Well, consider Nick Jonas the promotional opposite of John Mulaney because Nick has nothing but plugs for tonight’s new SNL. In his guise as Saturday Night Live musical guest, Nick Jonas will perform his new single “Spaceman” on tonight’s show which is now available wherever you get your music.

Nick Jonas is also returning to the NBC reality show “The Voice” for its 20th season. Nick joins the other coaches this season on the panel including Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Blake Shelton, who never seems to take a season off. The NBC singing talent show returns for its latest season on Monday, March 1st. With Nick Jonas hosting tonight, we’ll more than likely get a parody sketch of “The Voice.” Maybe where a contestant is so unattractive, the coaches spin their chairs and then try to turn them back around facing the other way.

And if a new record and new season of a popular reality show wasn’t enough for Nick Jonas to plug tonight on SNL, he’ll also be appearing in an upcoming sci-fi thriller film. He co-stars in a new movie from Lionsgate called “Chaos Walking” which is based on the trilogy of books by the same name penned by Patrick Ness. The film “Chaos Walking” is an adaptation of the first book in the series “The Knife of Never Letting Go.”

In addition to Nick Jonas, “Chaos Walking” stars Daisy Ridley, Tom Holland, Mads Mikkelsen and David Oyelowo. Even though “Chaos Walking” is described as a dynamic science-fiction action thriller, the synopsis for the film reads more like a sci-fi comedy.

According to Lionsgate.com, the movie is described as being “in the not too distant future”. And that’s where Daisy Ridley plays a “mysterious girl” who crash lands on a planet where all the women have disappeared and the men all have an affliction called “the Noise” which is a “force that puts all their thoughts on display”. Then we find out that the planet has “dark secrets” which we’re assuming sucks any of the possible comedy out of the movie. Nick Jonas plays David Prentiss Jr in the film. So, maybe one of the dark secrets we learn about is what happens to David Prentiss Sr.

The SNL Cold Open used to be a gimme when Donald Trump was President, but now that he’s no longer POTUS, the SNL writing staff can’t depend on a politician screwing up every week anymore. Last week on the show, Ted Cruz’s idiocy was a gift from the political gods for the Saturday Night Live writers’ room. This week, there’s two bigger stories in the news that SNL may try to play off of for its cold open, sketches, shorts and of course, Weekend Update.

This week, SNL will have Tiger Woods’ horrific car accident and leg surgeries to work with, (good luck making that funny) as well as Lady Gaga’s dog walker being shot in Hollywood and two of her French bulldogs being dog-napped, along with the offer of a $500,000 reward for any information on the incident that leads the arrest of the ass-clowns who did this and the return of Lady Gaga’s puppies.

In political news, we have former Speaker of the House John Boehner allegedly telling Texas Senator Ted Cruz to “fuck right off” during an adlib moment while recording his new audiobook and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell saying he would definitely support Donald Trump in a 2024 run for the White House.

Other stories that might inspiring the SNL writers include the upcoming Golden Globes Awards hosted by SNL alumni Tina Fey & Amy Poehler, (watch for Tina and Amy to make a cameo appearance tonight), Colin Jost’s new half-animated comedy “Tom and Jerry” being released this weekend, former Prince, Prince Harry revealing that he has Zoom calls with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Texans All-Pro star defensive end J.J. Watt being released by Houston after 10 seasons with the team and Weekend Update usually does something during the news segment for the end of Black History Month.

And finally there’s a story in the news this week, that Jost and Che are sure to put in the Weekend Update lineup of stories. Martha Stewart is saying she was “pissed” because her probation officer wouldn’t allow her to host Saturday Night Live when she got out of prison. The Update anchormen may do more than just report on this story. EP Lorne Michaels might try to get former cast member Ana Gasteyer to return to SNL tonight to reprise her Martha Stewart impression. That’s if she’s not too busy still trying to launch her career as a jazz singer. That career choice was about as successful as “Friendster” or “Crystal Pepsi”.

If you keep scrolling, you’ll find the promos for tonight’s all-new Saturday Night Live. The first promo is the standard-issue SNL 15 second promo filled with very quick clips and snapshots of Nick Jonas’ previous SNL appearances as a musical guest. Considering some of the photos are from a dozen years ago, it’s like watching Nick Jonas grow up in 15 seconds’ time. He certainly does build up his guns over these 15 seconds.

In the next promo set, we get something different. The host is joined by two SNL cast members instead of the usual one. Host Nick Jonas is on stage with cast members Bowen Yang and Ego Nwodim who are giving him a pre-hosting, pre-musical guest SNL pep talk. Later, there’s some confusion over who is the musical guest on tonight’s brand new Saturday Night Live. It really doesn’t matter. Just “kiss me, you idiot!”

Nick Jonas of the Jonas Brothers fame is not only your host, but also your musical guest on an all-new Saturday Night Live this evening. The Jonas fun starts tonight at 11:30pm et and it’s live coast-to-coast across all American time zones on NBC!
