Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: February 20, 2021

Tonight, SNL is live with a new royal Saturday Night Live hosted by the Duke of Hastings himself, “Bridgerton” star Regé-Jean Page!

This evening’s brand new SNL is one of those episodes where it’s not going to matter to some viewers how funny it is as long as the host is shirtless in one or two of the sketches. Tonight’s Saturday Night Live host, Regé-Jean Page (pronounced like the Jamaican music genre Reggae) has become one of the most popular sex symbols around the world and has got to be a leading contender for the next People Magazine “Sexiest Man Alive” honors.

Regé-Jean Page who is making his Saturday Night Live hosting debut tonight, is the breakout star on the breakout Netflix series, “Bridgerton.” If you’re unfamiliar with the drama set in Regency London in the early 1800’s, don’t feel bad. Before last Christmas, no one was familiar with the show.

Bridgerton” premiered on Netflix on December 25th, 2020 and in two short months became the most-watched series in the streaming service’s history. Its record-breaking first season has been seen by over 82 million households.”Bridgerton“, which is based on Julia Quinn’s best selling novels, is the number one ranked Netflix show in 83 countries including the U.S., Great Britain, France, India and Brazil. And if it’s not #1, it’s in the top 10 of every Netflix country except Japan. What the hell is wrong with you Japan!?

One of the show’s secrets (which is no secret at all) is that it owes a lot of its huge viewership numbers to what been referred to as the “Pandemic Bounce.” People don’t want to go out because they could catch a deadly virus and a lot of places still aren’t open around the country, so folks stay at home and binge Netflix series like “Bridgerton.”

Another secret to the success of “Bridgerton” can be explained by the way it’s described in the media. The series has been called “sexy”, “steamy”, “hot”, “sordid”, “romantic” and “swoon-worthy.” The 19th century soap opera has a reputation for its sex scenes, but not just the intensity of those scenes, but the length as well which seems to go on and on and on and…okay, finished.

The Netflix royal drama takes place in the Regency London era, around the year 1813. History lesson time! This was during the reign of King George III and more specifically when His Majesty was too ill to rule the Empire and his son, the Prince Regent ruled as his proxy before being crowned King himself after his father’s death.

Look at it this way. If you think of Victorian England as being very prudish, straight-laced and stuffy, then Regency London was its sexy, decadent, wild-child, polar opposite. “Bridgerton” is set in the indulgent high society of London during its debutante season when the wealthy and aristocratic ruling class would be presented at court. Fancy and sexy.

And tonight’s Saturday Night Live host Regé-Jean Page stars in the middle of all this steamy-hotness. The British-Zimbabwean actor plays Simon Basset, whose full name is Simon Arthur Henry Fitzranulph Basset, the Duke of Hastings. He’s one of London’s most eligible bachelors. Season 1 of “Bridgerton” is based on the first of Julia Quinn’s novels, “The Duke and I“. The Duke (Page) finds himself in a sultry romance with the eldest of the Bridgerton daughters, Daphne, played by Phoebe Dynevor.

Bridgerton” has already been renewed for a second season and tonight’s SNL host Regé-Jean Page is expected to return for more carnal, romance novel type sex scenes. Filming for “Bridgerton – Season 2” is due to begin production in September, 2021. And now that you’re up to speed on “Bridgerton” and its star Regé-Jean Page, you should be able to enjoy tonight’s new SNL even more because they’re more than likely going to do a “Bridgerton” parody sketch.

As for what else will happen on tonight’s brand new Saturday Night Live, all you have to do is google “Senator Ted Cruz.” Fortunately, cast member Aidy Bryant has returned to SNL after shooting the new and final season of her Hulu series, “Shrill.” Lil Baby Aidy is the resident Ted Cruz impersonator on Saturday Night Live and she should star in tonight’s SNL Cold Open as the Senator who has been the talk of social media and cable news channels all this week.

The Texas Senator and 21st Century Marie-Antoinette, Ted Cruz was caught jetting away to sunny Cancun, Mexico as his state, Texas and its citizens freeze to death from the effects of a polar vortex and sub-zero temperatures in this bizarre winter. And add to it, that the Cruz family, (Senator Ted, Morticia, Pugsley and Wednesday) all fled the country to sun their pale bodies and left the family dog at home with no power or heat on in the house, and it should make Teddy Cruz, comedy enemy numero uno.

As mentioned, cast member Aidy Bryant currently handles Ted Cruz impressions for SNL, but there would also be a nice pop tonight from the audience if former SNL cast member Bobby Moynihan made a cameo and returned to the show to play Cruz. Bobby has the Ted Cruz in-between beard going on (it’s in-between a real beard and just forgetting to shave) and it would help him promote his new NBC sitcom, “Mr. Mayor” which stars Ted Danson.

Ted Cruz being in the headlines also gives SNL a chance to let all their Donald Trump comedy rest for a week, but that’s unlikely to happen. Ol’ One-Termer was back in the news after skating on another impeachment trial. Trump definitely made the history books this past week by having more impeachments than he did terms as President.

Other Trump news that’s sure to be mentioned on tonight’s new edition of Weekend Update with Colin Jost and Michael Che includes Trump feuding with one of his biggest former sycophants Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, also there’s the symbol of Donald Trump’s failed business career, the Trump Casino, being demolished in Atlantic City, NJ this week and Conservative radio host and recipient of the Trump Presidential Medal of Freedom & Xenophobia, Rush Limbaugh passing away.

There’s plenty going on in the world to fill out the rest of the comedy tonight on an all-new Saturday Night Live in the form of sketches, SNL Shorts or on Update including NASA’s latest Mars rover “Perseverance” landing on the red planet (which seems more of an orange), the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle and the former Prince Harry expecting their second child, Dwayne Johnson, star of “Young Rock“, teasing a Presidential run….again, Tim Tebow retiring from baseball…again, the same-sex kiss in the Cadbury Creme Egg ad during Lent, and “Proud Puffs” the first cereal made for black people in the shape of a black fist.

Entertainment headlines that may be recycled into SNL punchlines include country singer Luke Combs apologizing for old photos of him basically making out with the Confederate flag resurfacing, Kim Kardashian West filing for divorce from Yeezus, the “Doogie Howser M.D.” reboot, and Claudia Conway showing up on “American Idol” with her dad George Conway and her mom, the woman who was Donald Trump’s own Billy Bones while in the White House, Kellyanne Conway.

We have the promos for tonight’s brand new Saturday Night Live available for you to watch and ponder below. The first one is the standard issue SNL 15 second promo announcing the host and musical guest’s names with a couple of clips from the variety series’ most recent episodes.

The second promo features host Regé-Jean Page with his suave and dampness inducing British accent which is slightly muffled by his protective mask along with SNL cast member Melissa Villaseñor and tonight’s musical guest Bad Bunny. The trio are trying on different nicknames for size. Well, not Bad Bunny. He’s going to stick to what he’s got.

Point of Little Interest; Bad Bunny is currently the WWE 24/7 Wrestling Champion. The rapper / songwriter recently won the championship during one of his many of appearances recently on WWE RAW. He’s also been working as a manager / cornerman for WWE superstar Damian Priest. Bad Bunny’s title can be defended anywhere at anytime (thus the 24/7 Championship), so we’ll have to see if maybe Bad Bunny loses his title on tonight’s all-new SNL.

The Duke of Hastings and star of “Bridgerton”, Regé-Jean Page hosts an all-new Saturday Night Live tonight with musical guest and pro wrestling champion Bad Bunny. It begins this evening at 11:30pm et and goes out live across all American time zones, coast-to-coast on the NBC television network!
