Who is Hosting Saturday Night Live Tonight: August 10, 2019

Tonight, we give thanks for an Saturday Night Live Thanksgiving repeat hosted by Steve Carell!

If a hot turkey dinner with all the trimmings doesn’t sound too appetizing in the August heat, maybe tonight’s SNL rerun at 11:30pm et on NBC can change your mind. As Saturday Night Live‘s summer hiatus continues, this evening’s episode is the Thanksgiving show from last season starring host Steve Carell which originally aired on November 17, 2018.

Focusing on the holiday, we get a couple of Thanksgiving themed sketches tonight in this repeat. The first is “Friends-Giving,” which is set at a neighborhood Thanksgiving dinner party and uses a standard SNL gimmick, where someone remembers an outrageous song with insane lyrics and then everyone finally comes around to remembering it as well. In this case, it’s a Thanksgiving holiday song. The other holiday-themed sketch tonight is “Space Thanksgiving.” Done in a very Star Trek-ish style, host Steve Carell plays the captain of an Earth deep space crew celebrating Thanksgiving dinner with an alien species. If you like it when the SNL cast breaks character, you’ll love this sketch because they can barely hold it together from the beginning. Cast member Pete Davidson steals the sketch as the Thanksgiving meal come to life.

Fans of Thanksgiving will love tonight’s SNL repeat and so will fans of the American adaptation of the sitcom, “The Office“. Steve Carell starred on “The Office” as Dunder Mifflin Inc. Scranton branch manager Michael Scott for 7 seasons before leaving the series for a film career. In his monologue tonight, Steve Carell mentions that he has no projects to plug, but at the time that this SNL episode originally aired, he had two films in theaters, “Vice” and another movie that had Oscar buzz (although the buzz wore off), “Welcome to Marwen.” This is Steve Carell’s third time hosting Saturday Night Live, with a decade in between this one and his last hosting gig.

In this evening’s SNL repeat, “Office” fans or as we so cleverly call them, “Office-ionados”, get something that they’ve been clamoring for ever since the series wrapped back in 2013, a reunion. Sure, it only lasts the five minutes that it took for Steve Carell to get through the monologue segment, but it’s a reunion nonetheless. It’s definitely worth tuning in tonight to relive all over again.

The show kicks off this evening with a Trump-centric SNL – Cold Open, but without Saturday Night Live‘s resident Donald Trump, Alec Baldwin. SNL‘s Trump impressionist was taking time off from the show due to a recent legal battle where he was accused of roughing up someone over an NYC parking space. Instead, cast member Kate McKinnon starts off SNL as Fox News host Laura Ingraham in a cold opener parodying her show, “The Ingraham Angle.” She’s joined by cast member Cecily Strong taking her new (at the time) impression of Fox News commentator Judge Jeanine Pirro out for a spin. Other impersonations you’ll see in the opener include cast member Alex Moffat as an overly rehearesed Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and cast member Leslie Jones as Congresswoman Marcia Fudge of Ohio.

Getting deeper into the show, the sketches tonight are pretty quirky which fits perfectly with the comedy timing of host Steve Carell. You’ll find yourself laughing at the sheer silliness of some of these sketches tonight, along with the cast who cracks up as well. The sketches this evening including Steve Carell as the mission commander aboard the International Space Station who’s conducting a live classroom lecture for school children from space. This sounds sweet until an airlock mishap affects the animals aboard the space station, and not in a good way.

Steve Carell also plays a dad who’s surprising his kids with a trip to Disney World, only to find out that some family secrets may jeopardize his family trip. And he plays the husband in a hilarious episode-ending sketch tonight called “RV Life” where he and his wife, hilariously played by cast member Aidy Bryant, retire on the road in an RV. They get a visit from their adult children who find that the retirement dream has become a nightmare. Featured cast member Heidi Gardner is another one to watch for in the “RV Life” sketch.

The lead story on Weekend Update tonight with anchormen Colin Jost and Michael Che is the big news that Amazon is expanding even more and moving into a giant warehouse HQ in Queens, New York. Of course, we know now that those plans fall through, but tonight we can relive the excitement on Weekend Update when the news first broke.

Other topics covered tonight on Weekend Update include the Florida mid-term elections and possible skulduggery with the ballot machines, New Yankees legend Babe Ruth receiving a high honor, Trump buddy Roger Stone heading for trouble, the criminal justice reform bill, Sour Patch Kids: The Cereal, Irish UFOs, the 2019 NYC Taxi Driver Calendar, and a British woman who used her daughter’s Halloween candy as a hiding place for her cocaine.

There are two visitors tonight being welcomed to the Weekend Update news desk. First, cast member Mikey Day portrays then-Virginia Republican Congressman-Elect Denver Riggleman who also moonlights writing Bigfoot erotic fiction. Then, cast member Kenan Thompson returns as one of SNL fans’ favorite recurring characters, NBA basketball fans’ least favorite dad, LaVar Ball who discusses the Los Angeles Lakers.

We’re probably burying the lead here, but it’s in one of tonight’s SNL – Digital Shorts where host Steve Carell does his best work. He appears as Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in a corporate message to talk about Amazon’s plans to expand into New York and Virginia which Weekend Update also touches on. It’s a soothing commercial that hilariously trolls President Trump by not trolling him.

The other two shorts tonight include another hip-hop music video from cast members Pete Davidson and Chris Redd about the incredible staying power of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg featuring Kate McKinnon as the Associate Justice. Then, the final SNL – Digital Short of the night is a parody spot for a sassy GPS system voiced by drag queens called “GPYass.” The short stars Cecily Strong along with real life drag queens and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” superstars Peppermint and Jiggly Caliente.

We’ve got your promos for tonight’s Saturday Night Live repeat to enjoy below. In the first one, cast members Aidy Bryant and Chris Redd question Steve Carell’s ability to do comedy again after becoming a dramatic actor. Carell works day and night to prove himself ready to make people laugh again. It’s good to have him back. In the next set of promos, Steve Carell is joined by musical guest Ella Mai and cast member Kenan Thompson where the three count their Thanksgiving blessings and Steve tries out some new material on Kenan.
