Tom Hanks’ 9th hosting gig on Saturday Night Live did not come easy. It’s taken over a decade to get to that elusive number nine, but Hanks will be back to host SNL on October 22nd.The last time Hanksy hosted Saturday Night Live was in May, 2006.

The news of Tom Hanks coming back to host was reported by Slashfilm, when SNL put out a tweet featuring their October bulletin board. According to the tweeted schedule, Emily Blunt will host the week before Hanks on October 15th with musical guest Bruno Mars. Tom Hanks’ musical guest on the 22nd, will be none other than the recently announced Super Bowl 51 halftime act, Lady Gaga who’s also a previous host.

Tom Hanks first time hosting Saturday Night Live was over thirty years ago in 1985. To put that into perspective, here’s a small part of Hanks’ SNL History and how he’s spanned the current events of the day in some their best known sketches; he’s played Peter Jennings in a sketch about the Bush / Dukakis debate (that’s the first President Bush), he appeared on Wayne’s World, he did a sketch with Paul Simon and Steve Martin featuring the 5 Timers Club (a young Conan O’Brien was a waiter in that sketch), Hanks was part of the “Mr. Belvedere Fan Club” sketch, he’s played Pat Sajak and appeared on SNL as a Roxbury guy.

Tom Hanks hosting with Lady Gaga as musical guest also keeps up the Saturday Night Live tradition of pairing Hanks with the some of the biggest names in music. He’s hosted along side musical guests like Randy Travis, Keith Richards, Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers.

Hanks will be promoting his new film when he returns to host SNL which is another return for him as well. He’ll be playing the part of Robert Langdon once again in the latest installment of “The Da Vinci Code” movies, “Inferno” directed by Ron Howard.

Watch for Tom Hanks hosting Saturday Night Live on Saturday, October 22nd on NBC, and you can see a brand new season 42 episode of SNL tonight with host Lin-Manuel Miranda.
