Actor and comedian Martin Short, along with a slew of other celebrities, attended the premiere of Steve Martin and Edie Brickell’s new bluegrass musical, Bright Star on Thursday night. According to sources at the event, Short, an old friend of Martin’s, at one point was brought to tears by the period piece love story, which follows the journey of a literary editor who falls in love with a World War II veteran. Short was spotted talking with Diane Sawyer, gleefully beaming up at the stage like a proud father and saying “Look at our Stevie up there” as Martin and Brickell emerged from the set after the show to perform some songs for the audience. The two weren’t the only big name celebrities in attendance that night: Steve Buscemi, Paul Simon, Howard Stern, Paul Shaffer, and Andrea Martin were also spotted in the crowd, among others.

The musical, directed by Walter Bobbie and written/scored by Steve Martin and musician Edie Brickell, has already received rave reviews in the few days since it opened. The positive reviews are likely to keep rolling in, as the musical will be performed at the Cort Theatre in Manhattan now through October. Tickets are available for $45-$145 depending on seating desired, and can be purchased through the show’s website.
