The Simpsons Own Up To Trump Prediction with Chalkboard Gag

Usually being right about something adds to your confidence and self-esteem. But not if you’re right about something you believe is wrong on every possible level. That’s what happened to The Simpsons after airing an episode back in 2000 that joked about Donald Trump becoming President. It took 16 years for the family from Springfield to be right about Trump and on Sunday, the animated series acknowledged it. And they referenced it during the show’s open sequence with Bart’s running chalkboard gag and with 3 little words, “Being Right Sucks”. That’s what Bart Simpson was forced to write over and over for this first post-election episode of “The Simpsons”. The show released the sequence on Twitter.

Simpsons executive producer James L. Brooks told IndieWire, “It’s really disorienting and scary,” and he added “I’ve experienced someone I don’t agree with becoming president, but I never had a moment where I believed that the country wasn’t going to be the same. I’m giving myself pep talks to not disappear into grief and disillusionment.”

For those who may not know about the Simpsons’ gift of prophecy, in the episode “Bart to the Future” back in 2000, the show flashed forward to the year 2030 when Lisa Simpson is President. She’s the new Commander-in-Chief following the disastrous Trump administration. She’s trying to piece the country back together after President Trump left it penniless. His “Midnight Basketball” youth program didn’t work out the way he intended.

Below you can watch The Simpsons clip predicting the Trump Presidency and the calamity that followed, plus other Simpsons shorts which the show produced specifically for the 2016 election year and featuring soon-to-be President Trump.

Sunday’s chalkboard joke was a nice touch, because sometimes a running gag is the best way to say you’re sorry.
