The Simpsons Set To Break Television Record

The Simpsons has accrued tons of accolades in its 27 years on television, but it’s currently poised to hit perhaps its biggest milestone to date. Friday, it was announced that the show, which is currently in the midst of its 28th season, had been renewed through season 30. By the end of its 30th season, the show will have produced 669 episodes, making it not only the longest-running scripted series on television but also the show with the most episodes in television history. Not too bad for a small town like Springfield, eh?
Currently, the classic Western drama Gunsmoke holds that record, with 635 episodes. By the end of its 30th season, however, The Simpsons will have handily beat that record with 669 episodes.
“Take that, Gunsmoke!” said Springfield’s own Homer Simpson. “You lost a race you didn’t even know you were running!”
The series has been setting precedents for decades, and its impact on popular culture is undeniable. Despite going through some brief lulls in the story, the show has been universally beloved and accepted by new and old fans throughout its tenure on Fox, always enjoying solid ratings and a spot in the pantheon of television’s greatest comedies.
In a glowing statement, Fox TV Group CEOs Gary Newman and Dana Walden praised not only series creator Matt Groening and executive producers Al Jean and James L. Brooks, but the show’s legion of fans as well.
“This is yet another record-setting moment for what is truly a landmark series,” said Walden and Newman. “The Simpsons has meant so much to the network, the studio and everyone at Fox, and its continued cultural impact around the globe is a testament to the combined brilliance of Matt, Jim and Al. Congratulations to everyone who works on this groundbreaking series — from the voice cast and producers to the writers and production team — you comprise one of the greatest collections of creative talent in the history of the medium. And to the millions of Simpsons fans around the world, thank you for watching all these years. We’re happy to tell you there’s lots more to come.
More Simpsons for the foreseeable future? *Cue Mr. Burns’ voice* Eeeexcellent.
