Second City Holding 15th Annual Charity Event This Month

The Second City, Chicago’s legendary comedy school and theater, is hosting its 15th annual comedy and music event, The Second City That Never Sleeps, from November 21st to the 22nd. Second City alumni like SNL’s Cecily Strong and 30 Rock’s Jack McBrayer, along with Tim Baltz, Katie Rich, Brendan Jennings, T.J. Jagodowski, Chris Redd and Edgar Blackmon will all be in attendance. On the music front, attendees will be treated to performances from the likes of Jeff Tweedy, Nina Gordon of Veruca Salt, The Mountain Goats, Steve Albini, Russian composer and violinist Ljova, Chicago Orchestra percussionist Vadim Karpinos, and many more.
Each year, Second City throws a 24 hour charity event that aims to raise money and awareness for the Onward Neighborhood House’s Letters to Santa program. They pack out the Second City e.t.c. Theater with comedians, musicians and miscellaneous celebrities (anyone from Jason Sudeikis to Billy Corgan) around the clock, usually raising in the ballpark of $50K to $100K during each event (over $1,000,000 has been raised in the event’s 14 year history). Then, they take that money and redistribute it to community programs and to families in need, the families who wrote “Letters to Santa” asking for help. In the past, funds have been used for everything from buying toys for kids to helping build an adult education center that offers free programs to the local community.
This year, Cecily Strong and Aidy Bryant are offering up tickets to SNL in an auction via Charitybuzz.com; Musician and Second City That Never Sleeps veteran Jeff Tweedy will also be auctioning off an intimate living room performance through Charitybuzz.
This year’s event, titled 24 Hour: You Can Always Come Home, begins on Monday, November 21st at 5 p.m. and ends Tuesday, November 22nd at 5 p.m. Entry to the event, being held at the Second City e.t.c. Theater, is $20. For more information on the event, check out The Second City’s website and the event’s Facebook page.
Great comedy and great music, all for a good cause: It doesn’t get much better than that.
