Roseanne Barr, John Goodman and Crew Agree to ‘Roseanne’ Reboot

We truly do live in the era of the reboot, as it’s been announced via Deadline that there’s currently a Roseanne reboot in the works. The show is being shopped around to various networks (including reboot magnet Netflix), though the assumption seems to be that it will end up back at ABC, where the original show aired. So far, key actors Roseanne Barr, John Goodman and Sara Gilbert have all signed on to the show, with the rest of the main cast expected to jump on board. As of right now, the series is only looking at an eight-episode limited run, but there’s certainly room for that to turn into more.
The news comes only a month after Goodman and Gilbert joined forces for a mini Roseanne skit on The Talk, the CBS talk show that Gilbert created and co-hosts, which you can see below. Add to that the fact that Roseanne Barr laid out her plans for where each of the show’s characters would end up in the future, and it seems like this reboot was in the cards for a while. The show was massively popular during its nine-season run, so its being brought back was probably inevitable. With the 20 year anniversary of the show’s finale approaching next month, it’s the perfect time for the news to drop.
During his appearance on The Talk, Goodman expressed excitement at the idea of bringing the show back, and revealed that he and Barr had shot a reboot pilot together about five years ago which never really took off. Gilbert, too, expressed excitement at the idea, but was understandably wary of messing with a good thing. “Your only fear is you don’t want to do a bad version, because you don’t want to damage what’s been done,” she said at the time. That’s a good sign that the team behind the show, which includes original Roseanne executive producers Bruce Helford, Tom Werner and Barr herself, will handle it with care.
