Ray Harrington’s ‘Be A Man’ Will Premiere at NY Comedy Festival

be-a-man

Comedian Ray Harrington has been making waves recently with  his documentary Be A Man. The film, Harrington’s first foray into movie-making, has won the Best Documentary award at both the L.A. Comedy Festival and the SNOB Film Festival, and is now planned to screen at the upcoming New York Comedy Festival. If you can’t make it to the festival or one of the movie’s limited screenings, fret not: distribution company FilmBuff has acquired distribution rights for the film, and has already released it across all major On Demand services, including Google Play, Vudu, iTunes and Amazon.

The film, as you may have guessed, is an examination of what it means to “be a man.” Harrington, like many others, was raised by a single mother and the other matriarchs of his family. Growing up, he had no male influences to help guide him through the awkward transition into manhood, which left him feeling like there was some right of passage or insider secret that he was missing out on. With a baby on the way, Harrington decided to do a little soul searching and try to discover what it truly means to be a man, and brought a camera crew along for the journey. The film follows Harrington as he partakes in some cliche “manly” behavior, such as working under the hood of a car, taste-testing various Scotches, and getting into the ring with 5-time world boxing champion Vinny Paz. Along the way, Harrington stops to talk to fellow comics like Kurt Metzger, Doug Stanhope, Robert Kelly, April Macie, Kyle Kinane, Steve Rannazzisi, Tom Wilson and more in order to get their opinions on the matter.

He approaches these activities with one part earnestness and one part skepticism, and in the process shines a light on the truths and misconceptions of masculinity in the modern age. The movie is being lauded for its humor and sincerity, and for good reason. Harrington is a smart, funny and genuine guy who puts himself out there, embarrassment be damned, not only in the name of self-improvement, but in the name of helping others find themselves as well.

Be A Man has a big heart,” said FilmBuff’s Jake Hanly. “It’s sweet, it’s funny, and it’s honest, and we’re excited to help put it out into the world.”

“This film is the funniest and most personal thing I’ve ever done,” said Harrington of the film. “The response has been overwhelming and I’m thrilled to see Be A Man connecting with people.”

Be A Man was released across all major Video On Demand services on Friday, October 7th. The film will also be available on Special Edition DVD at some point in the near future via Stand Up! Records, with whom Harrington recorded his first comedy album, The Worst Is Over.
