Preview WE tv’s New Ghosthunting Comedy with NYC Comedian Matt Richards

Scooby Doo in Compton? That’s what’s coming to WE tv. The network that mostly plays home to reality shows like Braxton Family Values and Marriage Boot Camp, is looking to add a little variety to its ranks. The network just announced that its new paranormal comedy series Ghosts in the Hood will be making its television debut on January 5th.
Ghosts in the Hood is exactly what it sounds like. A ghost hunting team called Official Paranormal Operations, or O.P.O., will investigate two paranormal cases each episode that take place “where other ghost hunters won’t dare” to go: in dangerous areas like Compton and Long Beach. The crew will tackle each case with trademark ghost hunting style, which includes some homemade ghost hunting tools and comic relief via New York’s own Matt Richards who plays the non-Ghosthunter just along for the ride.

The rest of the show’s cast is made up of O.P.O. CEO Defecio Stoglen, medium Jasmine Orpilla, tech expert Dave Purdy, and chief researcher Maunda Oyin. In the show’s first episode, the crew heads to Compton to investigate Adams Mortuary, a drive-thru funeral home whose business is suffering due to the apparent dark forces inside. Afterwards, they check out the home of a hoarder who claims that a cursed item in their home is causing them to have increasingly strange dreams.
Other ghost shows usually fall flat when trying to be funny, but that’s likely because they’re shows that take themselves and the subject very seriously. A show (featuring a stand-up comic as part of the cast) that pays due reverence to the topic at hand while also acknowledging the inherent humor in running around in the dark with your friends chasing sounds could actually work.
Wednesday night in New York City, WE tv, the cast, and Sway Calloway who moderated a Q&A with the cast, gave a sneak peek to the media at NYC’s historic, swanky and spooky McKittrick Hotel, and it’s safe to say Matt Richards stole the show. We’ll share more from the premiere on Monday in Jeffrey Gurian’s column, but for now, you can catch your own sneak peek in the trailer below.
Ghosts in the Hood is set to debut on WE tv on Thursday, January 5th at 10 p.m.
