Pete Davidson told High Times magazine that he can’t work without weed.

New York’s burgeoning medical marijuana program has found itself a new advocate in Saturday Night Live cast member Pete Davidson.

Davidson sat down with High Times reporter Danny Danko (lol) earlier this week to talk about his marijuana consumption on the eve of SNL’s 42nd season premiere. The 22 year old comedian and actor says that at around 17, he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel condition that causes severe pain and loss of appetite in sufferers. It’s a notoriously hard illness to treat, with some having to resort to major surgery to alleviate the symptoms. Simply put, living with Crohn’s can be terribly debilitating, but Davidson says that smoking weed helps him avoid the worst of the symptoms.

“I got Crohn’s disease when I was like 17 or 18. I found that the medicines that the doctors were prescribing didn’t work and I was seeing all these doctors and trying new things, but weed would be the only thing that would help me eat,” says the comedian. “My stomach would be in pain all day and I wouldn’t be able to eat, and then I’d smoke and I’d be able to eat and do my shows. I wouldn’t be able to do SNL if I didn’t smoke weed, I wouldn’t be able to do anything, really.”

The condition is so debilitating that Davidson can’t hit the stage unless he’s smoked beforehand.

“Me performing not high has gone awful. It’s awful for me, because I don’t feel well,” admits Davidson. “I could perform not high, but it wouldn’t be that much fun for me. I’ll be in a lot of pain before shows, but I’ll smoke a joint and then immediately I can do it.”

While Davidson is thrilled to be able to use cannabis medicinally, he believes that the substance should be available to anyone who wants it.

The candid interview is yet another example of a celebrity throwing their weight behind the cannabis industry. New Yorkers like Bill Maher, Whoopi Goldberg and Susan Sarandon have also publicly advocated for the legalization of marijuana; Maher, along with actor Woody Harrelson, sits on the advisory board of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.
