Norm Macdonald on O.J. Simpson, Convict and Record-Setting Rusher: “I Was the Greatest Rusher-to-Judgement”

Norm Macdonald’s popular podcast, Norm Macdonald Live, returned yesterday after a nine-month hiatus with an hour-long interview with former Late Show host David Letterman. In preparation for his big return, Macdonald did an interview with The Daily Beast in which he proved that he’s still the king of dry humor.

While the full interview hasn’t been released yet, a portion of it was, specifically the part where Macdonald and interviewer Matt Wilstein discuss O.J. Simpson. As we all know by now, Simpson was granted parole and will be released from prison later this year. Macdonald told Wilstein that he was trying to get Simpson as a guest on his show, with Simpson’s lawyer supposedly telling him “Oh yeah, O.J. will do it.” That commitment was rescinded, however, when the lawyer realized who Macdonald was: The guy who roasted Simpson so badly during his time on Saturday Night Live in the late 90’s that he, along with writer James Downey, were eventually fired for it. “After grisly photos of the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson were shown in court, O.J. turned his head away and wept. It was at that moment that he realized he would never be able to kill her again,” Macdonald famously joked.

Macdonald would have you believe now, however, that he’s not so sure of Simpson’s guilt. “I’m not completely sure he’s guilty anymore,” he told Wilstein, adding “I’m almost completely sure, but I’m not completely sure.” He then points out how, just as Simpson was the greatest rusher of all time, he was “the greatest rusher-to-judgement.”

Just when you’re wondering “Is he being serious, or is this just Macdonald’s infamously-dry humor being lost in translation through text,” he hits Wilstein and the reader with this line, in reference to his firing from SNL: “I feel sorry for the victims of the double murder, although I guess I was a victim also. I guess there were three victims that night. Nicole Simpson, some waiter, and me.”

Norm Macdonald is a treasure.

Keep an eye on The Daily Beast for the full version of the interview, coming later this week.
