New York Comedians Parody Period Proof Panty Ads
New Yorkers who regularly use the city’s subway system to commute have likely noticed the ads for THINX underwear in recent months. The ads are minimalist in nature, usually featuring a woman in her underwear on one side and some text emboldening women to talk about their periods on the other. THINX is a brand of period-proof underwear that allows women to forego tampons, pads etc. in favor of the specially-made panties, and the company’s aim is to take the taboo out of talking about women’s hygiene.
Well, two New York City comedians, Carolyn Busa and Madonna Refugia, have decided to start up an ad campaign (or rather, were “recruited by Swedish high-fashion designer Fridtjof Stinx”) for their own underwear brand called STINX. While THINX produces “Underwear for women with periods,” STINX is taking aim at “Women with smelly vaginas and rank butts.” Fittingly enough, the two claim they were approached by STINX to model for the brand while on line at a combination Pizza Hut/Taco Bell.

Carolyn Busa is the creator of the popular Williamsburg comedy show Side Ponytail, hosted for the past two years at Over the Eight and a NY Critic’s Pick by Time Out NY. She’s also been seen on Good Day New York and at Portland’s Bridgetown Comedy Festival.
Madonna Refugia is a writer who also performs musical comedy. You can hear Refugia on WMFU’s Prove it All Night! alongside Pat Byrne as well as on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network’s The Special Without Brett Davis.
