Netflix Gives The Details On The Adam Sandler Deal

Netflix announced last week that the company had reached an exclusive deal with Adam Sandler to star in and produce 4 movies for the streaming service. It’s an agreement that has the whole industry buzzing.

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos revealed some of the details behind bringing one Hollywood’s most bankable comedy stars underneath their banner. He talked to the Hollywood Reporter about why the deal with Sandler works. “Very uniquely, he stands out for his global appeal to Netflix subscribers. Even movies that were soft in the U.S. [theatrically] outperformed dramatically on Netflix in the U.S. and around the world.”

Besides the appeal, Netflix is banking on how Sandler’s movies all follow the same formula. Sarandos said – “His movies are very, very repeatable. And Adam has always been a success, straight through his last film, Blended. That movie cost about $40 million to make and made about $140 million around the world. Most people would kill for those results.”

Sarandos is also open to some more dramatic Sandler movies. “We anticipate they will be Adam Sandler comedies. We’d absolutely be very open and thrilled if he wants to take a more serious role in some of the projects and could extend beyond the four films to accommodate some of those films as well.”

The Netflix exec added that he expects that once production is underway, all 4 films should come consistently, hopefully one a year. And do not look for these new Adam Sandler films in theaters “at all”. For Sandler, this is a chance to capitalize on the home entertainment audience he’s been so successful with.

Netflix sees this as the next step in their evolution. Just like the company has challenged traditional TV programming, they now want to do the same to the movie industry.
