Great news for Philadelphia comedy fans: Fishtown, the city’s burgeoning hub of arts, food and culture, has just added a brand new comedy club to its ranks. Punchline Philly, located off of Canal Street near Delaware Avenue, is the first new comedy club to open up in the city in a decade. Fishtown is just north of the city and along the river.
Formerly the Dry Ice Corporation building, Punchline Philly boasts a seating capacity of three hundred and all of the necessary amenities: a full kitchen/menu, an outdoor patio and two bars. Jason Bray, the General Manager for Live Nation’s Clubs and Theaters in Philadelphia, oversaw the project. The goal was to fill a void that would help complete the landscape of Fishtown.
“It’s rounding out what we’re looking at as entertainment in Fishtown,” said Bray. “We had the opportunity to do it from scratch, take everything that we learned and do it right.”
So far, it appears that they’re doing just that. The club, which doesn’t officially open until July, has comedians Joe DeRosa and Nick Griffin making appearances for “sneak peek events” on the 24th/25th and the 28th/29th, respectively. After that, they’ll be playing host to legendary comic Dave Chappelle on July 5th and 6th (tickets are already sold out) and Russell Peters from the 8th to the 10th. Robert Kelly, Nikki Glaser, Bill Bellamy and Aparna Nancherla will all be making appearances in the coming months as well, indicating that this new club is sure to quickly become one of the best rooms in the country.
Live Nation also owns Punchline clubs in San Francisco and Sacramento.
Philly is also home to Helium Comedy Club, located in Center City just off of Rittenhouse Square, and the Filmore and Tower theaters.
