It’s the first sign of Summer when late night hosts start missing some work. And even though Summer isn’t officially here yet, that isn’t stopping a couple of our late night talkers from taking some time off. Conan O’Brien has the entire week off and Jimmy Kimmel is only putting in a couple of days at the office during the week.
While he’s off this week, Conan is making sure that his Best-Of shows are filled with some of his funnier guests including stand up from Jena Friedman on Monday, Nick Kroll & John Mulaney appearing together on Tuesday, Joel McHale on Wednesday plus a stand up performance from Alex Edelman and on Thursday, it’s an encore presentation of the Team Coco special, Conan Without Borders: Italy.
Other highlights this week start on Monday with the hottest name in stand up comedy right now, John Mulaney on the Late Late with James Corden. Also on Monday, in a non-comedy highlight, Stephen Colbert hosts screen and stage legend, two time Academy Award winner Glenda Jackson. For lovers of film icons, the Late Show is the place to be on Monday night.
On Wednesday, if you’re a fan of the Saturday Night Live seasons that featured cast members Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon, you’ll want to tune in to the Tonight Show on Wednesday night. Ferrell & Shannon will be appearing as their latest alter-egos, Cord & Tish, which are health and fitness expert Cord Hosenback and Tish Cattigan, best known for her two-episode stint on “L.A. Law.” The duo portrayed by Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon made their debut when they covered the New Year’s Day Rose Parade for Amazon Studios. The now the feisty duo is back and on HBO with coverage of this coming Saturday’s Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with their special, “The Royal Wedding Live with Cord and Tish!” If you want to check out what all the fuss is about with a royal wedding, but can’t seem to muster all the enthusiasm of the average American anglophile, this may be the perfect compromise. Cord & Tish’s Royal Wedding special airs this Saturday morning at 7:30am on HBO. For a preview, check out the Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday night when Ferrell and Shannon who brought you memorable SNL duos like David Larry and Miss Colleen from “Dog Show” and Mary Katherine Gallagher and Sky Corrigan from the SNL comedy, “Supestar,” bring Cord & Tish to life.
Also on Wednesday, there’s two chances to catch some stand up comedy in late night. First, on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Erik Bergstrom will be performing. Erik is a comic and cartoonist whose work has appeared in The New Yorker while his stand up has been seen on MTV, VH1, Fuse and on a Comedy Central Half Hour special. Then, James Acaster will be performing on the Late Late Show with James Corden. James is an British comedian and a mainstay at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
On Saturday, it’s the Season 43 finale of Saturday Night Live at 11:30pm on NBC with host Tina Fey. One of the more successful alumni from SNL is back to host the last live show of the year, so that means you never know who might just drop in as Saturday Night Live wraps up another memorable year of comedy television.
