Larry Wilmore Hijacks Stephen Colbert’s Monologue

When the Late Show on CBS began on Thursday night, there was a different host welcoming the crowd. It was newly terminated Comedy Central Nightly Show host Larry Wilmore who dove right into the Late Show monologue with a Donald Trump / Coldplay joke. When Stephen Colbert took his commandeered stage back, Wilmore offered an explanation that actually made perfect sense for him being there.

That was the comedy before the two sat down at the desk and got into Wilmore’s first interview since the “sudden and unexpected cancellation” of the Nightly Show by Comedy Central. Stephen Colbert’s trademark awkward interview style was completely on display when he said he was “Keepin’ it 100” (one of Larry Wilmore’s Nightly Show bits) and then asked his guest how it felt getting his show cancelled. Wilmore talked about how he would have liked to at least seen the election cycle through with the show. He also discussed executive producer Jon Stewart’s original vision for the program and how the rug was pulled out from under him right as racial tension was filling the Presidential campaign with the candidates calling each other “racist” and “bigot”.

Stephen Colbert and Larry Wilmore had more in common than both holding the Comedy Central 11:30pm timeslot at one point. Both of them had each hosted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner during their careers. And both had infamous reviews for the comedy they delivered in front of the President and the reporters and journalists that cover him. They shared one other thing as well; their disdain for their WHCD audiences. That’s when Colbert and Wilmore’s conversation became “bleep” filled. In fact, it was some succinct bleeped filled advice that Colbert got the night he hosted the dinner that he passed along to Larry Wilmore for his current situation. You can enjoy all the bleeps and their interview below.
