Jermaine Fowler Series Picked Up by CBS

Last winter, CBS ordered a pilot for multi-camera sitcom Superior Donuts, based on the play of the same name. Showrunners cast Jermaine Fowler (The Eric Andre Show, Friends of the People) as young donut shop employee Franco, with Brian d’Arcy James (Something Rotten, Titanic) playing Arthur, the shop’s owner. The pilot was lauded by CBS execs but was ultimately beat out by other shows. The folks at CBS have reworked the pilot and cast, however, and now the show has been picked up for a 13-episode season.
Brian d’Arcy James has been replaced by legendary comedic actor Judd Hirsch (Taxi, Independence Day), while Katey Sagal (Love and Marriage, Sons of Anarchy) has been brought on as a regular, playing beat cop Randy. Stand-up comic Maz Jobrani (Better Off Ted, The Interpreter) will play real-estate mogul Maz (the character was written with him in mind) who is attempting to persuade Arthur (Hirsch) to sell his Chicago-based donut shop to him. Other members of the cast include David Koechner (Anchorman, The Office) as Tush, a regular customer at the shop and Sarah Stiles (Avenue Q, Hand to God) as Dana, a Loyola University professor who frequents the shop (specifically for its jelly donuts).
Hirsch seems to be a good luck charm for the network; He was previously brought in to star in the crime drama Numbers after its initial pilot wasn’t well-received, a show which went on to enjoy a successful six seasons. This isn’t the first time that CBS has reworked a pilot and had it picked up the second time around, either. The network’s hit show The Big Bang Theory, before becoming the juggernaut that it is, had to reshoot the pilot episode after a lackluster reception from CBS execs.
Let’s see if Hirsch’s Golden Touch™ will work on this promising new show, which is set to premiere this winter.
