Don’t Even LOOK At Your Cell Phone During a Kevin Hart Show

150 people were kicked out of a Kevin Hart show late last week for cell phone use, the Albany Times Union reports. Hart was in town with his “What Now?” Tour on Thursday night with a crowd 10,000 strong.  Well 10,000 minus 150. Steve Barnes, who reviewed the show said that there were a lot of laughs, but he called the headliner a diva and criticized Hart’s super strict anti cellphone policy.  Barnes said an announcement warned that 150 people had been thrown out with no refund the night before, and then throughout the show there were  periodic reminders along with mentions of the numbers ejected that night. “Throughout the more than two hours of performance by Hart and his three opening acts, abundant security guards roamed the aisles, often aiming powerful flashlights at real or presumed offenders,” Barnes wrote.

Warnings were serious and frequent, he said, including multiple spoken warnings, both prerecorded and from the stage, plus projections on the big screens which threatened removal for anyone even found to be looking at their phone. That means no selfies no pictures of you and your friends having fun, no evidence you were even there, except for your ticket stubb.

If it sounds like the writer might be exaggerating, he’s not.  We sent a member of our team over to see Hart’s show at Madison Square Garden earlier this year, and he confirmed that the Albany Times story was spot on.  If you even checked your phone during the performance, you were kicked out of the arena, and in fact he witnessed at least 70 people get escorted out, although at the Garden he said it was done more quietly and discreetly.

Hart fans across the country have been tweeting about the strict policies.  There have been mixed reactions, with some appreciative over the policy, some angry, and most people just surprised.  Is Kevin Hart’s anti cellphone policy too extreme for an arena show? Or about time?

The Kevin Hart “What Now?” Tour continues this weekend in Vegas.
