Demetri Martin’s ‘Dean’ Wins Big at Tribeca, is Bought by CBS Films

Deadline is reporting that CBS Films, in a deal mediated by CAA, has bought the rights to comedian Demetri Martin’s debut film, Dean. The deal took place right on the floor of the festival, as companies were eager to jump on the popular dramedy.
Dean was written and directed by Martin, who also stars in the film. The film won the award for Best Narrative Feature and received high praise by festival goers. Martin plays the film’s titular character, Dean, an illustrator from New York who moves to L.A. and falls in love with a girl, played by Community and Love’s Gillian Jacobs. In the process, Dean attempts to prevent his father, played by Kevin Kline, from selling the family home now that his mother has passed away.
“It manages the near impossible task of breathing new life into a well-worn genre, balancing humor and pathos with an incredibly deft touch, and offering a unique perspective on the way we process loss,” said the Tribeca Film Festival jury after their decision.
The film also stars Mary Steenburgen and Reid Scott, and was produced by Giles Andrew, Elliott Watson and Jessica Latham.
