David Letterman on Donald Trump: He’s “A Person to be Shunned”

“Because if you can do that in a national forum, that says to me that you are a damaged human being. If you can do that, and not apologize, you’re a person to be shunned.”

Strong words from David Letterman for presidential candidate Donald Trump.

In  an interview with the New York Times, Letterman was asked about his history with Trump and how he would have handled the candidate if he still had his own show. Letterman had Trump on as a guest many times during his 30+ years in late-night television, and in that time he was never afraid to ruffle Trump’s feathers. In fact, his 2012 jab at Trump for outsourcing the manufacturing of his Macy’s clothing line was recently used as ammunition in a Hillary Clinton campaign ad earlier this year.

Letterman found Trump to be harmless enough when he was just a “big blowhard billionaire,” but now that he’s actually being considered for our country’s highest office, he’s not so keen on him. Citing Trump’s many public gaffes, including his disparaging of Mexican immigrants and his tactless impression of a reporter with a congenital condition, Letterman asserted that someone who is that unapologetically crass “should be shunned” and is certainly not fit for office.

When asked how he would have dealt with Trump if he were still on television today, Letterman said that “If I had a show, I would have gone right after him. I would have said something like, ‘Hey, nice to see you. Now, let me ask you: what gives you the right to make fun of a human who is less fortunate, physically, than you are?’”

That certainly sounds like more interesting television than watching “Laughing” Jimmy Fallon ruffle Trump’s hair and pretend like he’s not a reprehensible human being.
