Dave Chappelle’s Three Special Deal Fetches Even More than Chris Rock’s Deal

Last month, streaming service Netflix announced that it had signed an exclusive 2-special, $40 million deal with legendary comic Chris Rock, the first special that Rock has agreed to in over eight years. It was a big deal for Netflix, with Rock being the biggest name in a growing list of comics (which includes Patton Oswalt, Bill Burr and Ali Wong) who have produced exclusive specials for the streaming giant.
And yet, only one month later, Netflix has managed to one-up itself: the service just recently announced that it has inked a huge deal with none other than Dave Chappelle. Page Six reports Netflix is paying Chappelle a whopping $60 million to produce three specials for the network.
Just to make the deal sweeter, this is probably the easiest money Chappelle has ever made. Only one of the three specials is being shot by Netflix; the other two are previously unreleased specials that were recorded) at Austin City Limits and the Hollywood Palladium a couple years ago. All three specials are planned for release simultaneously in 2017, and all three are being directed by Stan Lathan, who directed Chappelle’s last special, Dave Chappelle: For What It’s Worth, back in 2004.
Seems like a lot of cash- $100 million for just two comedians. We’ll see if the math works out for everyone involved when 2017 rolls around.
