Comedywire and Gotham Comedy Club Hosting Joke Writing Contest

wn a spot

Earlier this month, comedy website Comedywire announced that they were hosting a contest for up and coming writers that could help put one lucky stand-up on the map. In collaboration with Gotham Comedy Club owner Chris Mazzilli, the social joke writing platform will be taking daily submissions of written jokes from its users. A panel of comedy pros, such as JR Havlan, former Daily Show writer, and Tom Leopold, former writer for Seinfeld, will be reviewing the jokes contributed by users and picking ten of the best writers to go to the semifinals.

From there, these ten writers will submit tape of their stand up material, which will be reviewed by Mazzilli. The comedians will be given an audition at Gotham, and one lucky winner will be chosen as the cream of the crop. What the winner will receive depends on the quality of their stand-up set. If they are deemed TV ready, the winner will get a paid spot on Gotham Comedy Live, a comedy showcase that airs live on AXS TV. If it’s determined that the writer’s set still needs some work, they will be awarded either a special guest audition spot or a special guest “New Talent” spot.

This is an excellent opportunity for comics who are looking for their big break: the show helped to launch the careers of current SNL stars Michael Che and Pete Davidson, so winning this contest could mean a serious jumpstart for a comic’s career.

Comedywire is a social joke writing platform that allows users to riff on news stories and photos from around the web, usually via short and sweet one liners. Each writer has their own profile, which allows those who find a writer’s jokes entertaining to follow their activity across the site and rate their material. Founded in May of 2015, the site has attracted a sizable user base and harbors some talented writers, so the competition will be stiff for sure.

Submissions are being taken every day between now and April 15, so interested parties are encouraged to post as much material as possible on the site between now and then. For more information on the contest, see Comedywire’s website.
