Chris Gethard Really, REALLY Wants to be Kelly Ripa’s New Co-Host

Chris Gethard has been busy lately. He’s been the host of his own bizarre talk show, The Chris Gethard Show, since 2011, and portrays the lovably passive boss, Todd, on the hit Comedy Central show Broad City. Things have been going well for the comedian and actor, so much so that he feels that he’s ready for the big leagues of a different type. On Saturday morning, he declared via Twitter that he thinks he would make an excellent co-host on Live! with Kelly.

As most people under the sun have heard by now, one half of Live! with Kelly and Michael, former New York Giant Michael Strahan, left the show in April. Strahan announced the news on the air while co-host Kelly Ripa was away on vacation, without giving her any advance warning. Needless to say, she was pissed. Since then, Ripa has publicly expressed her feelings on the subject, all while shuffling through a revolving door of guest hosts, with the hope that one of them could be her potential new co-host.
Enter: Chris Gethard. This past weekend, he took to Twitter to deliver a passionate argument for why he should be considered for the job. Simply put: it’s his destiny.
This is not a joke: Regis and Kathy Lee was my mom's all time favorite show. It would make her so happy if I got the Regis slot. I want in.

. @KellyRipa I was on Hope and Faith in 2004. If you let me audition for your co-host slot I will crush it and make you and my mom proud.

I watched and honestly enjoyed every episode of Regis and Kathie Lee every summer. Gelman if you're reading this, give an underdog a shot.

My destiny is to be Kelly Ripa's morning show sidekick. RT if you want me to live a dream and make my mom proud. #KellyAndGethard

It’s completely natural to assume that Gethard’s plea is a round-about attempt at a joke. But the comic insists that he is 100% serious.
This is not some dumb alt comedy stunt. I. Want. To. Be. @KellyRipa 's. Sidekick. For. Real. So. Bad. Dream job. #KellyAndGethard

The comic then went on to post multiple screenshots of text from his phone, going into depth about why he’s so eager to get the job, and why he thinks he’d do it justice. As he explains, he grew up watching the show with his mother, who used the show’s one-hour runtime as a respite from her hectic life taking care of her family.
“I want to be clear — my desire to be Kelly Ripa’s sidekick is not a joke,” he explained. “My mom — whose life was NEVER calm — had an hour of calm and happiness every morning lead by two people she found charming and trustworthy. Bringing that peace and calm to the hardworking women who have long been unfairly tasked with being the backbone of American families is a wildly important function that only a handful of shows have ever achieved — and Live set the bar for that and its impact has never been properly recognized.”
It’s clear that Gethard takes the show and its importance to the television landscape seriously — perhaps more seriously than anyone else has ever taken the show to date. That being said, he certainly seems passionate in his love of the show and in his desire to be a part of it, which is always a good trait in a co-host. Appearing to be anything less than thrilled on a show like Live! will not go unnoticed, and according to the rumors from the set, Ripa is one lady you’d rather not piss off.
Gethard is a funny, personable and intelligent guy. I’d say he deserves as much of a shot as anyone else at the job, if only to see the look on his face during his debut episode.
Of course, If he doesn’t work out, there’s always Lewis Black.
