Bill Murray Goes Daffy For Take Me Out To The Ballgame In Chicago

It was a big night for Mr. William James “Bill” Murray. While PBS was premiering “Bill Murray: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize”, a 90 minute pre-recorded special featuring some of comedy’s biggest names honoring Bill Murray as he accepted the country’s biggest comedy award, Bill was also live at Wrigley Field in Chicago for Game 3 of the World Series and acting as guest conductor and leading the fans in singing “Take Me Out To The Ballgame”.
Never one to stick with a set plan, Bill threw his own changeup into the singing of the classic baseball anthem. Before he started singing, Bill Murray made an in-house announcement, giving fans the alert that it was last call. He told the Cubs fans, “It’s the bottom of the 7th, the last chance to order beer.” Then he gave out his instructions to the crowd, insisting that they sing some of the “Ol’ Ballgame” lyrics like famed Looney Tunes water fowl, Daffy Duck. Bill said, “In order to sing the right lyric take me out with the crowd, you need to sing it like our greatest American entertainer, Mr. Daffy Duck, so I want you to spray it, not say it.” Throughout the song, Bill channeled Daffy Duck and finished the tune with a very Daffy, “Let’s get some runs, Suckers!!”.
For those who may not remember, Friday night at Wrigley Field was not the first time that Bill Murray and Daffy Duck had been associated with each other. It was 20 years ago when Bill and Daffy collaborated on a movie project. The two comedy icons worked together on a comedy action flick called “Space Jam” which premiered in 1996. Here’s some more movie trivia. That film co-starred a feisty newcomer, who gave a breakout performance, named Michael Jordan.
Unfortunately for Bill Murray, his rousing speech impediment pep talk and song didn’t do the trick for his Cubbies. Those suckers didn’t get any runs and lost Game 3 to Cleveland by a score of 1 to nothing. The Indians now hold a 2 games to 1 lead over Chicago in the World Series with Game 4 being played tonight in the Windy City.
