Bill Murray: Cubs or The Highest Comedic Honor in America

Right now everything is set for Bill Murray. His beloved Cubbies can clinch a trip to the World Series if they win Game 6 of the NLCS against the Dodgers on Saturday night. Then on Sunday, he would be in Washington D.C. to be honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Not too shabby of a weekend. That is unless the Cubs lose to the Dodgers on Saturday and force a Game 7 on Sunday which would leave Bill Murray in the middle of the most unique scheduling conflict in the history of sports and comedy.
Murray is a known avid Chicago Cubs fan and has been at Wrigley Field through a lot of the post-season. Like all Cubs fans, Murray has been waiting his entire life for this moment- a trip back to the World Series. It’s been 108 years since the Cubs won the World Series and 71 years since they’ve took the National League pennant. The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is also a once in a lifetime achievement. While the fine folks at the Kennedy Center definitely need Bill in Washington, Bill may think his presence is required at Wrigley as well. Bill’s brother, Joel Murray told the Chicago Tribune, “They’ve won every game he’s been to. He’s got that going. Thinking, ‘maybe I’m the good luck charm.'” Joel’s got 4 tix for Game 7 and right now it’s wait and see what happens on Saturday.
The Kennedy Center is aware of the situation although no plans have been put in place if there is a Cubs / Dodgers Game 7. A spokesman said, “As of today, (there has been) no discussion about special provisions for Cubs playoffs game watching or monitoring during Mark Twain.” If the Dodgers tie up the series on Saturday, you may expect to see Bill Murray sitting at the 2,400 seat Kennedy Center with his earbuds in and not paying a lot of attention to all the accolades coming his direction.
Of course, this doesn’t have to be a problem at all. Just as long as the Cubs do their part to help out a Chicago favorite son on Saturday.
