American Pharoah Wins The Kentucky Derby
The favorite ran for the roses and won. American Pharoah (the horse who misspells his name the same way SNL’s Jay Pharoah does) won the 141st Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The unofficial time on the victory run was 2:03:02, just a little over “the fastest two minutes in sports”.
Jockey Victor Espinoza who rode American Pharoah from the 18th position to victory, won his 2nd Kentucky Derby in a row and his third over all. In a statement that will go down in the history of sports quotes, Espinoza said after the win, “I feel like the luckiest Mexican on Earth”.
The order of the finish was American Pharoah first, Dortmund second and Frosted in third place. American Pharoah paid $7.80 on a $2 bet.
Now everyone has anywhere from 2 to 5 weeks to get excited about the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years, before being hugely disappointed with an American Pharoah loss at the Preakness in 2 weeks or the Belmont Stakes, 3 weeks after that. The Preakness is Saturday, May 16th in Baltimore. The city has been getting everyone ready for the race by having multiple police horses on every street corner.
