Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson to Host New Ten-Part MoMA Podcast

The Museum of Modern Art has announced a new ten-part podcast series that will be hosted by Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson. Fans of Broad City will remember that her character is an employee at a gym who tries (and mostly fails) to sell her art on the side. As it turns out, that interest in art comes from a real place, as Jacobson is also an illustrator who studied art in college. Now, she’s teamed up with MoMA to help bring art to the masses, along with a series of guests from the art and entertainment worlds.

The podcast, called A Piece of Work, will make its debut on July 10th. The show will focus on frequently asked questions from MoMA visitors, with the hope that Jacobson, her guests, and MoMA curators and staff can help explain some of the more popular pieces in their collection to the average person. Have you ever wondered what to make of Marcel Duchamp’s bicycle wheel attached to a stool, or those abstract paintings that essentially just look like splotches of paint got spilled on a canvas? Then A Piece of Work is for you.

The show will tackle the works of artists like Jackson Pollock, Yoko Ono and Steve McQueen, as they provide integral background information on pieces of art that, at first glance, may seem inaccessible. On top of MoMA curators and educators, Jacobson will also be joined by characters such as Hannibal Buress, Tavi Gevinson, Questlove, RuPaul, and even her three year old niece.

A new episode will be released on Monday and Wednesday of each week, and each one will be dedicated to a particular style of art. Week one’s shows will focus on “Everyday Objects” and “Abstraction,” for example, while week two will focus on “Monochromes” and “Light Work.” The show can be downloaded from anywhere podcasts are available; they can also be found on the WNYC and MoMA websites.
