Tony Danza to Star in New Netflix Cop Show

Actor Tony Danza has, in the past two years, gotten back into acting, and he’s doing it in a big way. Last year, Danza returned to television after a few years of absence with a small role on Comedy Central’s Broad City and a starring role in the TV movie Sebastian Says. This year, he was cast in the Seeso series There’s… Johnny!, which depicts life behind-the-scenes of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Now, Danza has another big role lined up, as it’s just been announced that he has been cast on the new Netflix show The Good Cop.

The Good Cop will be a dramedy with a father and son/odd couple dynamic rolled into one. The show will follow Tony Sr. and Tony Jr., a father and son who are also roommates in New York City. Tony Sr. is a disgraced former NYPD officer with a penchant for breaking the rules, while Tony Jr. is a straight-laced cop who never sets a toe out of line. Throughout the series, the two become unofficial partners as Tony Sr. imparts advice, both personal and professional, to his son.

Andy Breckman, who created USA Network’s crime dramedy Monk, will act as showrunner and executive producer. Randy Zisk (Monk, Bones) and Howard Klein (The Mindy Project, The Office) will also act as EPs, with Danza himself producing. Giving an idea of what the overall tone of the show will be, Breckman said this of the new project: “Many cop shows feature dark and provocative material: psycho-sexual killers, twisted, grim, flawed detectives. Many address the most controversial issues of the day. I watch a lot of them. God bless ’em all. But the show I want to produce is playful, family-friendly, and a celebration of old-fashioned puzzle-solving.”

There’s no news yet on when the show will begin production, or when it’s expected to debut, but we do know that Netflix has ordered ten episodes of the series.
